Qatar Art Center (QAC) (in Arabic: مركز قطر الفني) is a non-profit art institution in Doha - Qatar. It was founded in the early 1993 by Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani. Its core mission/purpose is fostering contemporary art, supporting artists, and developing artistic culture in Qatar. The center is known as one of the earliest major contemporary art initiatives in Qatar, and it is associated with artists such as Dia Al Azzawi, Ala Bashir, and Yousef Ahmad. Full address of QAC is: Building 147, Street 362 Al Jazeera Al Arabia, Zone 36, POBox 690, Al Messila, Doha - Qatar.
History
[edit]Qatar Art Center (QAC) was established in early 1993 by Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani, a member of Qatar's ruling family and art patron. Its founding represented an initiative in Qatar's cultural development, emerging during a period when institutional support for contemporary art in the Gulf region was limited. The center was conceived as a non-profit hub to nurture artistic talent, promote visual arts education, and stimulate dialogue around contemporary creative practices in Qatar.[1]
In its formative years, QAC played a role in developing Qatar's artistic infrastructure by providing studio spaces, exhibition venues, and residency programs at a time when few such facilities existed nationally. The institution preceded major Qatari cultural developments like Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (opened 2010) and the Fire Station Artist in Residence program (launched 2015). Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the center facilitated early career opportunities for numerous Qatari and Arab artists who later gained regional recognition, while also hosting landmark exhibitions that introduced Qatari audiences to international contemporary art movements.[2]
