Dr Peter Brindley

Peter George Brindley Bsc MD FRCPC, FRCP(London), FRCP(Edin) is a Canadian critical care physician and academic. He is a staff physician at the University of Alberta Hospitals in Edmonton, Alberta, and a Professor in the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the John Dossetor Ethics Centre of the University of Alberta.

His clinical interests include general- and neurocritical care and advanced airway management. Although widely published in the domains of critical care, simulation and resuscitation, his major academic interest is in the area of human performance in crisis situations. He is also a regularly published editorialist[1] and opinion writer for medical journals and co-presents the Critical Care Commute Podcast.

Early life, education and training

Brindley was born in Nottingham, UK in 1971 and moved with his parents to Canada in his early teens. Following a BSc in Pharmacology at the University of Alberta where he also excelled at rugby sevens, he completed his medical education at the University of British Columbia. As a medical student, he developed a strong interest in ethical issues. He completed training in internal medicine and, following unsuccessful nation-wide applications to become a rheumatologist, completed fellowship training in critical care at the University of Alberta in 2003 and joined its Faculty thereafter.

Practice and research

Brindley’s clinical practice is split between the general and neuro critical care units of his institution. The trials and tribulations of his work provide fodder for many of his opinion pieces.[2][3][4] His research[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26] is in large part devoted to the exploration of the ways in which technological innovations in high-stakes medical environments achieve sub-optimal results because of failures of cognition, communication and collaboration amongst the people using them. He has written or co-written 147 peer-reviewed manuscripts, two books and 50 book chapters and has delivered more than 600 invited presentations in English and French to audiences in 15 countries including more than 200 plenaries and 10 named lectures.

He is also part owner of Intensifbraueri, a fledgling Edmonton Alberta micro-brewery which uses production methods drawn from his knowledge of human factors and performance in critical care medicine: Small multidisciplinary teams circulate through the brewhouse in fixed sequence and each member of the team is encouraged to speak up in real time whenever threats to or opportunities to improve the quality of each batch are seen, in a non-judgemental hierarchy-free fashion.
