The Peradeniya University massacre was a series of retaliatory killings that occurred within the campus grounds of the University of Peradeniya, south of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka during the 1987-1989 JVP insurection.
Background
[edit]Between 1987 and 1989 the Sri Lankan Army had been in a state of low-intensity conflict with the Sinhalese Marxist-Leninist JVP (Peoples Liberation Front). The JVP had launched their insurrection in response to the intervention of IPKF (Indian Peace Peaking Force) in the countries ongoing civil war in the North-East. The IPKF was met with large scale backlash by the majority Sinhalese who dominated the rural Central and Southern Provinces. The JVP garnered much sympathy from impoverished Sinhalese and university students, especially among young to middle-aged men.
As the insurgency escalated, the government would employ a number of
made up of UNP supporters, JVP targeted left wing parties such as the SLFP and SLMP, relatives of JVP victims or off-duty army and police. These paramilitary's would target JVP cadres, sympathisers, rival politicians, etc in an escalating cycle of killings and counter-killings. One of their main targets were university students and faculties, many of whom supported the JVP.
The day before the massacre, registrar of the university and a captain in a local unit of an army volunteer reserve force, T.E. Nagahawatte had been assassinated by the JVP while entering his car in retaliation for his alleged involvement with anti-JVP paramilitarys such as the Black Cats and PRRA.[1]
Incident
[edit]On October 5th 1989, 14-18 faculty members and students were taken away by unknown gunmen. Around 6 of whom were beheaded with their heads being placed around a pond on the university grounds. The rest were shot with their naked bodies left strewn around the campus.[2]
Later in the day, police allegedly received a message from the unknown gunmen. Calling themselves the Eagles of the Central Hills, they claimed responsibility for the massacre. They claimed that the killed were JVP sympathisers who were involved in assassination of T.E. Nagahawatte the previous day.[1]
The local deputy-inspector-general of police Premadasa Udugampola said on a telephone interview "This is in retaliation for the killing of the assistant registrar".[1]
