Political Career
[edit]2023 New York City Council Election
[edit]Kane's candidacy in the 2023 New York City Council election highlighted her commitment to reforming local politics and advocating for marginalized communities. Throughout her campaign, Kane focused on issues such as affordable housing, and open and fair elections. However, she faced significant challenges with the New York City Board of Elections, which led to her being removed from the ballot twice.
In her article, "Kicked Off the Ballot Again: Why the NYC Board of Elections is Failing Democracy", Kane detailed the struggles she faced with the Board of Elections, describing the process as flawed and undemocratic. She criticized the Board for challenges faced by independent candidates and ballot access gatekeeping. Kane argued that these systemic issues disproportionately impact candidates outside the established political parties and limit voter choice, ultimately failing to uphold the principles of democracy.
The article, published on her official website NickieKane.com, outlines her experience of being kicked off the ballot for the second time and calls for urgent reforms in New York City's election system.
Electoral Reform Advocacy
[edit]Beyond her own candidacy, Kane has been a vocal advocate for electoral reform. She has called for increased transparency in the election process, better support for independent candidates, and reforms to make elections more accessible to all New Yorkers. In interviews and public statements, Kane has emphasized the need for the Board of Elections to be held accountable and for systemic changes that will ensure fairer and more open elections.
Kane's political activism and candidacy have earned her support from various grassroots organizations and activists who share her concerns about the state of democracy in New York City. Despite setbacks, her commitment to reforming the political system has inspired many, particularly among voters who feel disenfranchised by the current political establishment.

She has challenged the actions of the NYC Board of Elections in court, arguing that her rights as a candidate were violated. Kane’s legal battles, including her involvement in a 2023 ruling, continue to highlight the ongoing fight for electoral fairness in New York.
Nickie Kane was kicked off the ballot again in 2025 but sued representing herself and won successfully having her name placed on the ballot for the Democratic Primary to be held on June 24,2025.
