Monica Yu was born and raised in Beijing to a family with deep roots in literary and academic traditions. Her father was a member of the Writers' Association, and her mother had a passion for classical Chinese poetry. Yu excelled academically, ranking among the top five students in Beijing's college entrance examinations. She enrolled at Peking University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. Later, Yu pursued graduate studies at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, specializing in energy and finance, and obtained a Master of Public Policy (MPP) in 2014. During her time at the University of Chicago, Yu's interest in art and design deepened. She completed a jewelry design course at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing and earned a Graduate Diamonds Diploma from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). A personal turning point came when her father fell seriously ill during her postgraduate years, which motivated Yu to reconsider her career path and channel her creative passion into entrepreneurship in the jewelry field.

In 2018, Yu established MONICA YU Haute Joaillerie in Los Angeles. The brand is known for its handcrafted 18-karat gold pieces featuring natural gemstones. Its distinctive design language reflects Yu's vision of cultural storytelling through jewelry, blending Eastern inspirations with Western craftsmanship. The brand quickly gained a niche following and grew into a thriving online boutique.

Launch of LUNE ROSE

In 2024, Yu founded LUNE ROSE Art Jewelry, a sister brand focusing on lab-grown gemstones. Targeted at younger consumers and international markets, LUNE ROSE emphasizes ethical sourcing, design originality, and cultural meaning. Despite offering a more accessible price point, the brand maintains handcrafting techniques and uses 18-karat gold settings.

Since 2019, she has operated several self-media accounts – such as "Rosedew" (玫花露) and "Jewelry-Loving Monica" – where she shares high-end jewelry knowledge, design insights, and cultural stories behind gemstones and jewels.
