Miraale Valley

[edit]

Miraale Valley is a geographically significant valley located in the Bari region of northeastern Somalia, within the Cal-Miskaad mountain range. It has been known as a strategically important area due to its rugged terrain, water wells, cultivated land, and fortified positions.

Location and Geography

[edit]

Miraale Valley lies in the mountainous Cal-Miskaad range, which features rugged landscapes providing natural defensive advantages. The valley contains important water resources and arable land that support local communities and have been used historically for settlement and agriculture.

Strategic Importance

[edit]

Due to its natural terrain and resources, Miraale Valley has historically served as a strategic stronghold in the region. It became especially notable during recent years as a militant hub.

Role in Armed Conflicts

[edit]

In the 2010s and early 2020s, Miraale Valley became a major stronghold for the Islamic State (ISIS) in Somalia, serving as a base for insurgent activities in the Bari region. The valley's fortified positions and natural defenses allowed militants to maintain control over the area for nearly a decade.

In May 2025, Puntland armed forces launched a significant military offensive against ISIS militants in Miraale Valley. Supported by airstrikes from the Puntland Air Force and international allies, the operation successfully captured the valley, marking a major victory in counter-terrorism efforts in the region. ISIS fighters retreated to nearby locations such as Sadow and Baalade.[1][2]
