Miki Hirose (born 1984) is a Japanese jazz trumpeter, composer, and arranger based in Kobe. He has been featured in both Japanese and international media, and has received critical acclaim for his recordings and performances.
Career
[edit]Born in Kobe, Hirose studied trumpet from an early age and won several youth awards, including the Nakayama Seiji Jazz Award and the Naniwa Arts Festival Newcomer Award in 2002.[1]
He moved to New York City in 2003 to further his career, earning a master’s degree in jazz performance at Queens College. According to All About Jazz, he freelanced in ensembles such as the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra and Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra. In 2013, he performed at the Festival of New Trumpet Music in New York.[2]
Hirose returned to Kobe in 2014. He received the Kobe City Cultural Encouragement Prize in 2015 and the Naniwa Jazz Award in 2017.[3]
He appeared with the Miki Hirose Quintet at Jazz Auditoria 2019 in Tokyo, a major outdoor showcase produced by Time Out Tokyo.[4] In 2024, Powderlife magazine highlighted his performance at the inaugural Niseko Jazz Festival, referring to him as an “award-winning trumpeter.”[5]

His 2013 album Scratch received positive reviews:
- Karl Ackermann praised its Latin rhythms and tight ensemble work.[7]

- Dan Bilawsky described his work as a “seamless blend of tradition and modernity.”[9]
He also played with the Global Jazz Orchestra on their album Global Warming, where he was referred to as a “world-class” trumpeter.[10]
