Michael Kwon Lim (born January 25, 1973) is a board-certified neurosurgeon and current Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University.[1] His clinical practice involves the treatment of patients with brain tumors and trigeminal neuralgia. He is also an active National Institutes of Health (NIH) investigator with over 300 peer-reviewed publications and has led phase III clinical trials for glioblastoma.[2][3][4]
Education and Early Career
[edit]Lim attended the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for medical school and then completed his neurosurgical residency at Stanford University before joining the faculty of the Department of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. During his tenure, he was appointed as a full professor in Neurosurgery, Oncology, Otolaryngology, Radiation Oncology, and Radiation Molecular Sciences. In 2020, he was recruited to Stanford University to serve as the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery.[5]
Clinical Practice and Research
[edit]Lim specializes in the treatment of both benign and malignant brain tumors, with a focus on gliomas, meningiomas, metastatic tumorsand skull base tumors.[6] His practice also focuses on surgical treatments for trigeminal neuralgia.[7] His contributions to clinical medicine have been recognized with the İstinye University Faculty of Medicine’s Order of Science award in 2024.[8]
With over 300 peer-reviewed publications,[3] Lim has authored studies on immunotherapy for glioblastoma, long-term outcomes of glioma patients treated with stereotactic radiation, and therapies for neuropathic pain. He has been recognized with teaching awards such as the 2023 Abhijit Guha Award in Neuro-Oncology for his contributions to neurosurgical mentorship.[9]
Chair of Stanford Neurosurgery Department (2020 - current)
[edit]As Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford, Lim oversees a clinical program that performs complex neurosurgical procedures annually at a tertiary care medical center with multiple satellite sites.[10] In addition to neuro-oncology, he directs all divisions within the department, including the cerebrovascular center, skull base surgery program, stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, complex neurosurgical spinal disorders program, peripheral nerve surgery, and the pediatric neurosurgery division.[11] The department’s faculty includes several full-time researchers, including Nobel Laureate Thomas Südhof.[12]
