Mathunzi Simphiwe Macdonald (née Maseko) is a South African creative entrepreneur, executive producer, musician, writer, and actress. Recognised as a creative multi-hyphenate, she has worked across television, music, digital media, and early childhood education. She is the founder and executive producer at The Verse Productions,[1] lead project manager and musician at The Verse Music,[2] and the creator of several curated cultural and artistic projects across South Africa.

Early Life and Education

Mathunzi was born in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, South Africa to Thamsanqa Maseko and Thokozile Maseko. She has an older sister Nomathamsanqa Maseko and brother Thamsanqa jnr Maseko. She received her early education at Liberty Christian College,[3] followed by Robert Carruthers School[4] and later attended Blue Hills College, Sedaven High School, and Damelin Midrand. She pursued higher education at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), MCSA and the University of South Africa (UNISA), where she completed her qualifications in Early Childhood Development, Jazz and Popular music, and Musical theatre respectively. She also trained at the Market Theatre Laboratory,[5] strengthening her foundation in performance and storytelling.

Mathunzi began her professional career in the South African entertainment industry in 2010, working as an actress, writer, producer, and musician. Her career spans over a decade and reflects a multidisciplinary approach to creativity and social impact.

Television and Film

She has contributed to a wide range of television commercials (TVCs) and film projects. Her recent work includes producing commercials for major brands such as Nedbank,[6] Uber Black,[7]Savanna Neat, Assupol, and Brutal Fruit,[8] including a campaign featuring American singer and actress Kelly Rowland in 2022. In 2023, she worked on the Proudly South African campaign as part of the production team, marking her growing influence in television production.

She has served as an executive producer and producer on Mzansi Magic Original Movies, including the title Uph'umakoti.[9] Her work also includes casting, development, and scriptwriting, often focusing on stories that amplify South African culture and voice.

Music and Creative Projects

In addition to film and television, Mathunzi is a practicing musician and founder of The Verse Music.[10] She has directed live performances and music videos for artists such as Teboho Kobedi, Ofentse Moses Sebula, Rorisang Sechele, and Dudu Makhoba.

In 2024, she released her single Inhliziyo,[11] featuring actor and musician Kabomo, which marked the beginning of a new music series under her direction. She is also the curator of Jazz in Jozi,[12] a music series supported by Concerts SA's DMF 5 programme,[13] showcasing live jazz performances and highlighting emerging local talent.

Writing and Podcasting

Mathunzi is also a writer and content creator. Formerly the head writer for Actor Spaces,[14] writing opinion pieces for publications like True Love magazine[15] and ghost writing for television shows like The Queen on Mzansi magic. Her podcast, Verse One Podcast,[16] explores intimate reflections on social issues, identity, and creative entrepreneurship. Her writing includes poetry, narrative essays, and commentary on lifestyle and culture. Mathunzi is currently pursuing biographical projects.

Philanthropy and Education

Beyond the arts, Mathunzi holds a qualification in Early Childhood Development and is a trained Montessori directress. She integrates her passion for education into her creative work and is active in philanthropic initiatives supporting literacy, youth empowerment, and community development. and creative artist support.

Mathunzi was married to South African actor Loyiso Macdonald in 2011. The couple became estranged in February of 2017 and legally  separated in November 2021.[17]
