Magdalena R. Osburn is an American geobiologist and associate professor at Northwestern University known for her work on microbial life in extreme environments and biosignature preservation. Her research has applications in understanding Earth's subsurface biosphere and the search for extraterrestrial life.[1]

Education and career

Osburn earned her B.A. summa cum laude in Earth & Planetary Sciences and Environmental Studies from Washington University in St. Louis in 2007. She completed her M.S. (2008) and Ph.D. (2013) in Geobiology at the California Institute of Technology. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Southern California (2013-2014), she joined Northwestern University in 2014 where she established her research laboratory focusing on geobiology.[2]

Osburn has presented her work at numerous institutions including Stanford University, where she delivered a seminar titled "Journey to the Center of the Earth: Habitability and Geobiology of Two Distinct Subsurface Realms."[3]

Research

Osburn's interdisciplinary research combines techniques from microbiology, organic geochemistry, and isotope geochemistry to study:

  • Microbial ecosystems in Earth's subsurface environments[4]
  • Preservation of biosignatures in extreme environments[5]
  • Development of tools for detecting extraterrestrial life[2]

She directs the Deep Mine Microbial Observatory (DeMMO) at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, where her decade-long research on extremophiles has revealed diverse microbial communities thriving in the deep subsurface.[6] Her work has shown how these microbes obtain energy from rocks and minerals in complete darkness.[7]
