Ludmila Kaloyanova is a Bulgarian-born writer and poet residing in the United States since 1990. She holds a doctoral degree from the University of Pittsburgh and has been recognized with the Bulgarian Writers League Nike Prize for her literary work.
Biography
[edit]Kaloyanova was born in Sozopol, Bulgaria on July 9, 1959. After emigrating to the United States in 1990, she spent time in New York City before permanently moving to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Literary Work
[edit]Kaloyanova is the author of multiple works of fiction and poetry. Her debut book, Uebergangsgeschöpfe (1998), introduced themes of female identity and creative writing. Subsequent works include:

- · Nomad (2022)
- · American Triptych (2024)
Her 2024 novel, American Triptych, explores the psychological and emotional journeys of three generations of Bulgarian immigrants in the United States, addressing themes of emigration, guilt, and identity transformation.[1]
Her poetry, including the multilingual piece East River, reflects diasporic experiences.[2]
Kaloyanova is the editor of the collection “Daughters of Bulgaria Around the World” (2021), the first anthology of contemporary Bulgarian women’s poetry, which includes Bulgarian authors from the American, European, and the Australian diaspora.[3]
Cultural Leadership
[edit]Beyond her literary contributions, Kaloyanova initiated the consolidation of Bulgarian cultural centers outside Bulgaria. From 2021 to 2023, she served as president of the Confederation of Bulgarian Cultural Organizations and Activists Abroad, a platform dedicated to uniting Bulgarian cultural efforts worldwide.[4]
Kaloyanova also serves as vice president of the Bulgarian Writers League in the USA, supporting the development and recognition of Bulgarian-language authors in North America.
Awards and Honors
[edit]Kaloyanova has been awarded the Bulgarian Writers League Nike Prize for her work and initiatives in preserving Bulgarian cultural identity among the diaspora.
Winner of the New Social Poetry Award (2018). [5] Her poetry collection Nomad was nominated for the Ivan Peychev National Literary Award (2023) and the Hristo Fotev National Poetry Competition (2024).
