John Jovanovic (born August 6, 1986) is an American businessman, diplomat and former U.S. government official. He served as Regional Head of the Aegean & Western Balkans at the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation in the first Trump Administration. Mr. Jovanovic has been nominated as the next Chairman and CEO of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. His nomination has been referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs as of 3/10/2025.

Early life and education

Jovanovic was born in Chicago, the child of Serbian immigrants to the United States. He graduated from Princeton University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics. He later earned a Master of Business Administration in 2014 from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management.

Family and private life

During his studies at Princeton, he became college sweethearts with his wife Daphne Oz, the daughter of Dr. Mehmet Oz. Jovanovic and Daphne would tie the knot on August 26th, 2010. Together they have three daughters named Giovanna Ines, Domenica Celine, Philomena Bijou, and a son named Jovan Jr.

Career

Jovanovic began his career in investment banking and private equity, focusing primarily on energy, commodities, and critical infrastructure. After graduating from The Wharton School with an MBA, he served as Investment Director at Meruria Energy Trading S.A, where he “managed investment and business building efforts across the energy landscape in North and South America”. He entered government service in 2020. During his U.S. Government service, Jovanovic was Regional Head and Managing Director for the Aegean & Western Balkans at the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), America’s $60 billion development bank, opening DFC’s first-ever overseas office. At DFC, he countered Chinese and Russian malign influence by providing financing alternatives. Mr. Jovanovic also led the implementation of President Trump’s Washington Agreements on Economic Normalization between Kosovo and Serbia. Jovanovic currently serves as Chief Strategy Officer at Asplundh, a provider of critical infrastructure services across North America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Trump’s appointment to EXIM

Jovanovic’s appointment to become the next Chairman and CEO of EXIM, the official export credit agency of the U.S., was announced by President Donald Trump in February of 2025 via the social media platform Truth Social. President Trump wrote, “John will utilize his extensive experience in finance, investments, and business building across the Energy, Commodities, and Critical Infrastructure sectors to Make America Energy and Manufacturing DOMINANT Again”. He continued via Truth Social, “He will work tirelessly to protect all of the gains from our strong Tariff Policies, guarantee that our Exports receive fair treatment, and always put American companies, and our Energy exports, FIRST. Congratulations John”.
