The Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association (IVCA) is a not-for-profit industry body that represents the interests of India's private capital ecosystem, including venture capital, private equity, infrastructure, private credit, real estate, and other alternative investment funds. Established in 1993, IVCA acts as a platform for knowledge sharing, advocacy, and industry development, aiming to strengthen the role of long-term risk capital in the Indian economy. Collectively, IVCA members manage over US$350 billion in assets under management (AUM).[1]
IVCA brings together fund managers, institutional investors, family offices, legal and advisory firms, and other ecosystem participants. Its mission is to create a robust investment climate in India through regulatory engagement, policy reform, market intelligence, and collaboration across sectors.[2]
Objectives and activities
[edit]IVCA engages in a wide range of initiatives to support and grow India’s alternate investment ecosystem. These include:
- Policy advocacy: IVCA regularly interfaces with regulatory bodies and government institutions to shape a transparent and efficient policy framework for investment funds. Topics include taxation policies, fund registration norms, capital flow regulations, and ease of doing business for asset managers.
- Industry research: IVCA publishes reports, market studies, and best-practice frameworks to provide data-driven insights on investment trends, fundraising, governance practices, and sectoral allocations within the AIF space.[3]
- Capacity building: The association conducts workshops, training sessions, and digital learning programs for fund managers, entrepreneurs, legal professionals, and institutional investors. Focus areas include fund operations, compliance, ESG integration, and capital markets readiness.[4]
- Ecosystem development: IVCA builds collaborative bridges between investors, startups, government, and academia. It fosters dialogue between limited partners (LPs) and general partners (GPs) and supports the emergence of micro-VCs, early-stage funds, and regionally focused investment vehicles.
Events
[edit]IVCA hosts a variety of annual and thematic events aimed at facilitating industry dialogue and collaboration. These include:
- IVCA Conclave: The flagship industry summit that gathers stakeholders across private equity, venture capital, family offices, sovereign wealth funds, and regulators. It serves as a forum for thought leadership and policy-level discussion.[5]
- Sectoral roundtables and workshops: Focused events on fintech, healthcare, sustainability, infrastructure, and emerging asset classes.
- Investor forums and roadshows: Designed to enhance capital mobilization by connecting Indian fund managers with global investors and institutional capital providers.[6]
Governance
[edit]IVCA is structured as a Section 8 company[7] under Indian law, and operates as a member-driven organization. Its governance framework includes a representative executive committee elected by the member base. The association also engages with independent advisors, regulatory stakeholders, and subject matter experts through working groups and advisory panels. Its trust-shares are held in custody by Vistra ITCL (India) Limited. For the 2024–26 term, IVCA elected a new Executive Committee comprising 14 elected members plus 7 co-opted and invited members. A record 59 nominations came from member funds for this cycle.
Membership
[edit]As of 2025, IVCA has over 450 member organizations including Indian and international alternative investment funds, advisory firms, limited partners, and institutional stakeholders. Approximately 74% of its members manage SEBI-registered AIFs, with IVCA representing close to 46% of the total AIFs in India.[8]
Membership offers access to research publications, industry data, closed-door events, regulatory engagement platforms, and tools designed to enhance governance and transparency in fund operations.
Prominent board members include representatives from major firms such as Carlyle India, Gaja Capital, 360 ONE, Warburg Pincus, Indian Angel Network, Accel India, Peak XV Partners, Lighthouse Funds, IvyCap Ventures, HDFC Capital, Bain Capital, Aavishkaar Group, Trifecta Capital, Kedaara Capital, General Atlantic, and Edelweiss. The Chair of SIDBI, the CEO of Invest India, and NIIF leadership were invited as special participants.
