Ian McIntosh (born 20th July 1988 ) is a West End Actor.[1] He is known for playing the roles of Galileo Figaro in We Will Rock You, Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar and Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, West End.

Early Life

McIntosh was born in Coventry, England to parents Sharon and James. He has two brothers, James and Steven, and one sister, Faye.

McIntosh went to Leigh C of E Primary School and the Woodlands Comprehensive Secondary School for boys. He began his stage career aged 10, where he played an Orphan/ Fagin's boy in Oliver! at the Butts Theatre Coventry, which was produced by The Three Spires Amateur Dramatics Society.

Aged 14, McIntosh was a finalist on a Midlands based talent Competition, Teen Idol, at the Royal Leamington Spa Theatre.

At 15 years of age, McIntosh auditioned for a place at Masters Performing Arts College in Southend, under the guidance of Miss Wendy Headford, following this audition he was offered a full scholarship. Taking this scholarship on meant that McIntosh left his family home in Coventry in August 2004, just one month after his 16th birthday. McIntosh finished his 4 years of training in June 2008, after he had to resit his second year at the College.

McIntosh started working professionally whilst in College some of his achievements included: Lead vocalist at "Wells World Hair Show", Paris; Aladdin in the pantomime "Aladdin" in Halifax; Featured dancer in "Can't Buy Me Love" a Beatles Musical at The Royal Windsor Theatre, Windsor. At 18 years of age, McIntosh got the opportunity to be a solo recording vocalist for the song "Do You Wanna Be Famous?" the title song feature on Enid Blyton's Famous 5: On the Case animated series created by The Disney Channel Worldwide.

Whilst in College, McIntosh also played the title role of Jesus in his college production of "Godspell", and M.P.A.C in house production.

Career

Post leaving College, Mcintosh became a regular performer at Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton. In 2009, aged 20, McIntosh reached top three in a GMTV competition to earn the lead role of Troy Bolton in High School Musical 2: Live on Stage, Wimbledon.[2] Despite not winning, McIntosh was cast in the production of High School Musical 2: Live on Stage and went on to play the role of Troy Bolton in 2010.

In 2011, McIntosh got his West End debut in Jukebox musical Rock of Ages, previewing in London's Shaftesbury Theatre, with it's official opening on 27th September 2011.[3] McIntosh was cast as swing/understudy Drew Boley (later becoming alternate Drew Boley in 2012 after the show moved to the Garrick Theatre). Also in the cast were British comedian Justin Lee Collins and X-Factor winner Shayne Ward. While performing in the show, McIntosh performed at West End Live, Trafalgar Square; on Dancing on Ice; at HMV stores and on Children in Need following a gala performance of the show.[4]

Come August 2013, it was then announced that McIntosh would be in Roddy Doyle "The Commitments", Palace Theatre. McIntosh was cast as the role of Ray, while covering the role of Lead Deco Cuffe, played by Killian Donnelly. The show, which included a soundtrack of incredible soul music such as "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "Mustang Sally" began previewing 21st September 2013, with it's official opening on the 8th October 2013[5]. While in The Commitments McIntosh got the opportunity to play a medley of songs on Paul O Grady's show, airing 29th November 2013.

The Commitments closed on the 1st November 2015, and it was announced on 17th October 2014 that McIntosh would be joining actress Katie Brayben in jukebox musical "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical"[6], Opening for previews 10th February 2015, official opening on February 10th 2015 at London's Aldwych Theatre. McIntosh played the role of songwriter and musician Barry Mann alongside, Lorna Want as partner Cynthia Weil. The show included songs such as "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" and "Walking in the Rain". In March 2015, McIntosh was nominated for an Olivier award, in the category Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical.[7] Beautiful then closed on the 5th August 2017.

On the 31st May 2015, McIntosh also played the role of Bud, in Elegies For Angels, Punks and Raging Queens for a one night only concert in aid of Make a Difference Trust, at the Criterion Theatre.

In 2018, McIntosh played the role of Pip in "The Navigator" which played at London's Phoenix Theatre for an industry presentation.[8] In February 2018, it was officially announced that McIntosh would be joining the cast for the world premiere of "An Officer and a Gentleman" as Sid Worley[9]. The production which opened at the Curve, directed by Nikolai Foster opened Friday 6th April 2018 before going on a tour until 15th September 2018.

McIntosh went on to play the role of Irving Radovich in "Roman Holiday", then went on to play the role of Young Ben Stone in Dominic Cooke’s revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's musical "Follies" at London's prestigious Oliver, National Theatre.[10]

In July 2019, McIntosh was announced to be playing the role of Galileo Figaro on a 2019/2020 UK tour of "We Will Rock You".[11] The show started its run 19th September 2019. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the show closed, but then announced that it was due to be rescheduled, beginning in early 2022 until August 2022.

McIntosh also worked with Rock Vocal Group "Vocal Xtreme" alongside fellow Rock of Ages cast member Dylan Turner. While on tour with We Will Rock You, McIntosh performed for the first time as a lead at West End Live; performed on British daytime television show This Morning and was joined on stage by Queen lead guitarist Brian May (Portsmouth, February 2022)

In July 2022, before the close of We Will Rock you, McIntosh was announced to be reprising his role of Deco Cuffe on the UK & Ireland tour cast, of The Commitments.[12] This new touring production was directed by Andrew Linnie and was due to run from 24th September 2022 to July 2023. McIntosh performed with fellow cast members live on a special St Patricks Day performance of ITV show Good Morning Britain.

In March 2023, McIntosh was announced to be reprising the role of Galileo Figaro, alongside co-star Elena Skye for a 12 week run of We Will Rock you at London's Coliseum Theatre, Joining previously announced Brenda Edwards, Lee Mead. and the shows creator Ben Elton as Rebel Leader. McIntosh performed with the cast at an array of events: the National Lottery's Big Night of Musicals (February 2023)[13]; Magic at the Musicals (May 2023)[14] and ITV's Britain's Got Talent.

In 2023, it was announced that McIntosh would be joining the cast of the Jesus Christ Superstar tour, as Jesus.[15]

In September 2024 it was announced McIntosh would be playing the title role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables at London's Sondheim Theatre.[16] Performing "Bring Him Home" and "One Day More" with the cast at West End live 2025. McIntosh was then announced to be staying in the role of Jean Valjean, through to 2026, including an 8 week schedule of alternating the role with Killian Donnelly.[17]
