Heartfall is a 2025 Saint Lucian psychological drama film written and directed by Elijah Anatole. It marks Anatole's debut as a feature filmmaker. The story explores the emotional and mental struggles of a grieving man, set against the backdrop of Saint Lucia's natural scenery.
Plot
[edit]The film centers on Adam, a man emotionally crippled by grief after a traumatic loss. Isolated and withdrawn, Adam navigates flashbacks, hallucinations, and internal battles while encountering characters that reflect both his pain and potential healing. The narrative focuses on male vulnerability and suppressed emotion in Caribbean culture.
Production
[edit]Filmmaker Elijah Anatole conceived the project in early 2023 as a 10-minute short film but later expanded it into a full-length feature.[1] The film was shot entirely in Saint Lucia, using locations such as beaches, homes, and heritage sites. Anatole undertook multiple roles in the production, including writer, director, cinematographer, editor, and colorist.
The cast includes Kareem Stanley as Adam, Chianne Cools as Kate, and Dr. Stephen King as Mr. Eli. Anatole's independent studio, Artlas Studios, oversaw the project. The production was completed on a modest budget with local sponsorships and support from small businesses.
Release
[edit]Heartfall premiered on May 4, 2025, at Caribbean Cinemas Megaplex 8 in Choc Estate, Saint Lucia,[2] followed by public screenings on May 24 and 25.[3] Tickets were priced below standard admission to encourage public attendance.[4]
Reception
[edit]The film received positive coverage in several local media outlets. Loop News St. Lucia described it as "deeply moving,"[5] and St. Lucia Times praised its artistic cinematography and thematic depth.[1] The Voice St. Lucia also commented on the strong local interest and quality of production.[6] The Government of Saint Lucia issued a public press release supporting the film’s cultural contribution.[2]
Despite the local praise, the film’s international release status remains under development. Discussions have reportedly been held regarding distribution through streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime.[7]
Themes
[edit]Heartfall addresses mental health, emotional suppression, and grief, particularly among Caribbean men. The film aims to break cultural taboos by depicting emotional vulnerability in a raw and personal way. Anatole's stylistic choices emphasize mood through color grading and natural settings.[6]
