Girish Narain Pandey[1][2] (07 July 1939 — 28 March 2025) was an Indian politician, social activist and member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak sangh, Bhartiya Jan Sangh and Bhartiya Janta Party. he served as cabinet minister of law and Justice in Uttar Pradesh Government and Member of uttar pradesh legislative assembly from Sareni,Raebareli district.He was among the key witness of the famous electoral malpractice case against the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi,which led to her disqualification and, eventually, imposition of the Emergency in 1975.[3]

Early Life

Girish was born on 07 July 1939 to Triyugi Narain Pandey and Kshama Vati Pandey at Shivpuri village, Raebareli district, Uttar Pradesh in a middle-class Brahmin family. His father was a senior employee in the Indian Railways. He was the third of the three brothers and one sister.[1]

Personal Life

He married Veena Pandey in 1958, with whom he had three daughters and three sons.[1] He completed his schooling from Ajmer then he completed his Matric and intermediate from Lucknow. After that he moved to Motilal nehru engineering college Allahabad but later dropped out. He then completed his Master's and degree in Law from Kanpur University in the year 1960.[1][1]

Social Life

Drawn towards public service and social causes from a young age he joined Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh from his school days in lucknow where he worked with Deendayal upadhyaya and Atal Vihari Vajpayee, and when he moved to Allahabad for his professional education he met with Murli Manohar Joshi with whom he started active participation in RSS and droped out from his college to become pracharak. when he moved to his hometown lalganj raebareli he started working for Rss and Jan sangh and he became polling agent of Raj Narain in the 1971 general elections of raebareli. and he was the main and key witness of the case 'State of Uttar Pradesh v. Raj Narain ', despite many threat's and inducements he testified, against the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which led to her disqualification and, eventually, imposition of the Emergency in 1975.[4]

He also got imprisoned in emergency for about nineteen months. and after the emergency was over he started working for janta party and then Pandey joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on its formation in 1980.

Political Career

Girish narain pandey contested his first election in 1967 from Dalmau,Raebareli representing Bhartiya jan sangh. then he participated in Ram janmabhoomi movement. pandey then contested assembly elections in 1991 from Sareni Raebareli and won the election and became the first ever MLA of BJP in Raebareli district and was made cabinet minister for law and justice department. pandey was again elected in 1993. He also contested Loksabha Election from Raebareli in 2004 against Sonia gandhi. He never changed parties and was life long member of RSS and BJP.[5]

Other Works

With the help of Vidya bharti he established Saraswati Vidaya Mandir, Shishu Mandir, Ballika Vidya Mandir in Lalganj. and was founder and administrator of many other educational institutes in Raebareli district.

He was Honoured with a number of awards for his contribution to public and Social Affairs.

Death

He died on 28 March 2025 during treatment in Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, within just 24 hours of his wife's death.[6]
