The Flag of Hope (Ukrainian: Прапор Надії, romanized: Prapor Nadiyi, pronounced [ˈprapɔr nɐˈdʲiji]]) is an unofficial symbol established in Ukraine in 2025 to commemorate Ukrainian prisoners of war and missing persons during the Russian-Ukrainian War, which has been ongoing since 2014. It consists of two horizontal stripes: white (top) and black (bottom).
The flag is displayed under the national flag of Ukraine, intending to remain on the flagpole until the last prisoner of war is released.
Symbolism
[edit]- A white stripe embodies hope for their liberation, safe return and freedom.
- A Black stripe symbolizes their suffering experienced in captivity, and the literal darkness of their confines.
The design draws some inspiration from the American POW/MIA flag, which also uses a black and white colour scheme.[1]
History
[edit]The flag was conceived by Serhiy Volynskyi, commander of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Marine Corps, a participant in the defense of Mariupol and former prisoner of war.
On 23 August 2024, he submitted a petition to the President of Ukraine with a request to support the initiative to create a new symbol: the Flag of Hope. The petition gained 25,000 signatures in less than four days.[2]
The first flag was solemnly raised in 2025 on the 8th of May, the Day of Remembrance, in Zaporizhzhia near the "Veteran PRO" centre.[3]
