Comment: Please reduce the number of citations in the lead section and incorporate it into the main article at appropriate places. The advocacy and media coverage section should be reduced to advocacy. The media coverage parts should potentially provide support to the advocacy work and its impact. Therefore, expand on the advocacy section by providing details from the media coverage. Astra Travasso (talk) 17:17, 8 June 2025 (UTC)

Eric Saumure (born 28 April 1989) is a Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA)[2], and entrepreneur based in Ottawa. He is a co-founder of Zenbooks. In 2023, Saumure launched a national petition calling on the Canada Revenue Agency to extend the personal tax filing deadline during a federal strike, attracting over 30,000 signatures and receiving national media coverage in both English and French-language outlets. He was named to Ottawa’s Forty Under 40 list in 2024, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
Early life and education
[edit]Saumure attended Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology, earning a diploma in Accounting and Business Administration in 2010.[1]
Career
[edit]In May 2015, Saumure co‑founded Zenbooks, a online‑based accounting and advisory firm that offers services to small and Medium size businesses.[3]
He served as Chief Financial Officer for Mark Sutcliffe’s Ottawa mayoral campaign in 2022.[4][5] In July 2025, Saumure was approached to serve as Chief Financial Officer for Mark Carney’s federal election campaign, but ultimately declined the offer to remain focused on Zenbooks’ growth and his family responsibilities.[6] In June 2024, Saumure was appointed to the Board of Directors of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.[4][7]
In 2024 he was listed in the Ottawa Business Journal Forty Under 40.[4]
In March 2024, during a segment on Rogers TV's Ottawa Business Matters, Sam Laprade interviewed Saumure about cloud accounting and tax policy.[8]
Saumure authored a chapter on accounting and tax strategies in the self‑help and business book How to Plan Your Way to Success: Personal | Financial | Real Estate | Business | Health and Wellness.[9] Since August 2023, he has hosted the podcast Small Business | Big Insights.[10]
Advocacy
[edit]In April 2023, Saumure launched a petition on Change.org calling on the Canada Revenue Agency to extend the personal tax‑filing deadline to June 15 amid a PSAC strike. Within hours it had over 25,000 signatures, and by the end of the week it surpassed 30,000, making it one of the fastest‑growing petitions on the issue.[11][12] He said, “I kind of see this as if you’re writing an exam in school but the professor just doesn’t let you ask questions…And if you make a mistake, there’s a financial penalty. And so that’s just not fair for Canadians.”[11]
The campaign’s rapid traction drew national attention. Major English‑language outlets including CBC News,[13][14][15] and The Canadian Press all ran stories on the petition’s demands,[11] while French‑language media outlets Radio‑Canada[16] and La Voix de l’Est[17] for their francophone audiences.
In 2025, Saumure also launched a national advocacy campaign calling on the Government of Canada to adopt open banking, speaking at industry conferences to highlight its benefits for small businesses.[6]
Personal life
[edit]Saumure is married; his spouse’s diagnosis of cystic fibrosis contributed to his decision to join the Board of Directors of Cystic Fibrosis Canada in April 2024.[4][18]
