The Council of the autonomous Province of Trento (Italian: Consiglio della Provincia autonoma di Trento; German: Trentiner Landtag; Ladin: Cunsëi dla Provinzia autonoma de Trent) is the provincial council of Trentino, in the northeast of Italy. The Council exercises the legislative function and has the duty of controlling over the government of the autonomous Province of Trento in the exercise of its powers.[1]

The Council consists of 35 councillors (34 plus the president of the province), of which one is elected by the Ladin minority. The councillors are also at the same time members of the Trentino-South Tyrol Regional Council, which exercises considerably fewer duties (most of the duties are in fact exercised by the two autonomous provinces that make up the region).

The Council participates in the Dreier Landtag together with the Council of the autonomous Province of Bolzano and the Landtag of Tyrol.[2]

The head office is located at Palazzo Trentini, in Via Manci in Trento, but session are held in the Council Chamber inside the Palazzo della Regione in Piazza Dante.[3]

Election

[edit]

The Provincial Council is elected every five years during the provincial elections. The elections are regulated by Provincial Law No. 2 of 5 March 2003, which introduced the direct election of the President of the autonomous Province and allows voters to cast a vote for a single party associated with the presidential candidate.[4] This law marked the transition of the elections from the regional to a provincial title.

Since 2018, voters may express up to two preference votes for councillor candidates of different genders. Each party list must ensure gender balance, with neither gender represented more than the other.[5]

Ladin rappresentation

[edit]

Provincial Law No. 2 of 5 March 2003 provides one council seat to be assigned to the territory of the six municipalities of the Comun General de Fascia. A ranking of the preferences collected in the Ladin municipalities is then drawn up for each list. The provincial seat is assigned to the candidate with the most preferences in the ranking of the most voted list in the Fascia Valley.[4]
