Cassandra "Cassie" Lang is a fictional character portrayed by several different actresses in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) media franchise, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Lang is portrayed by Abby Ryder Fortson in the first two films, Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp. She is portrayed by Emma Fuhrmann in Avengers: Endgame, and Kathryn Newton in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), and is the daughter of Maggie and Scott Lang.

Concept, creation and casting

[edit]

By June 2014, Edgar Wright had left production as the director on the then-upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film based on the Marvel Comics character Ant-Man, being replaced by Peyton Reed.[1] By August, the full cast of the film, now titled Ant-Man (2015) was announced, with Abby Ryder Fortson set to star in it.[2] Some fans theorised that she would play Cassie Lang, the daughter of Scott Lang due to her young age.[3] Kevin Feige noted that the film revolved around "fathers and daughters", noting that the "relationship between Scott Lang and his daughter, Cassie, is key to his origin in the late '70s in the comics".[4]

Characterization

[edit]

As of 2023, the character has appeared in four films: Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Endgame and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

In Ant-Man, Darren Cross takes Lang hostage to lure Scott Lang into fighting him. Scott overrides the regulator and shrinks to subatomic size to penetrate Cross' suit and sabotage it to shrink uncontrollably, seemingly killing Cross.

In the Quantumania, Lang is 18 years old and acquires a suit similar to her father's. She is scientifically inclined, and gains an interest in Pym's old notes and learning more about the science and technology from the Quantum Realm. Quantumania director Peyton Reed said that he wanted to further develop the relationship between Cassie and Scott, as it was central to the previous Ant-Man films.[10]

Lang is briefly referenced in an end-credits scene in The Marvels (2023), with Kamala Khan attempting to recruit Kate Bishop to a "kid superheroes" team and noting that Ant-Man has a daughter.[11]
