CBE Capital S.C. is an Ethiopian investment banking firm. It was founded as a joint venture majority-owned by the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), the country's largest state-owned bank, and Dallol Capital, a private investment firm. CBE Capital was one of two companies, alongside Wegagen Capital Investment Bank, to receive an investment banking license from the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA) in March 2025, marking a significant milestone in Ethiopia's financial sector liberalization. Its establishment aligns with the Ethiopian government's broader economic reforms under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, aimed at liberalizing financial services, fostering a competitive investment environment, and increasing private sector participation in the economy.[2]
Zemedeneh Nigatu was appointed as the founding chief executive officer of the firm.
Services
[edit]The firm is expected to offer a range of services including:
- Capital Raising – Facilitating equity and debt financing for corporations, government projects, and institutions.
- Securities Underwriting – Providing underwriting services for initial public offerings (IPOs) and bond issuances.
- Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Advisory – Assisting companies in mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring deals.
- Corporate Advisory – Offering financial consulting for companies seeking expansion, restructuring, or capital investments.
Future plans include expanding into portfolio management and Islamic finance.
Role in Ethiopia’s Financial Sector
[edit]CBE Capital is expected to play a significant role in Ethiopia’s nascent capital market. The establishment of CBE Capital comes two months after the launch of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX), which is set to facilitate the trading of stocks and bonds. As a key investment bank, CBE Capital is positioned to support the country's growing demand for financial intermediation, corporate financing, and structured investment products.
