Bazardžani Street (Bosnian: Ulica Bazardžani; Serbo-Croatian Cyrillic: Улица Бaзaрџaни) is a historic street located in the heart of Sarajevo's old bazaar, Baščaršija. Running from Obala Kulina bana in the south to Ćurčiluk Veliki in the north, it intersects with Kundurdžiluk and Ćurčiluk Mali, tracing the western wall of Brusa Bezistan and leading to the southern entrance of Kolobara Han.[1]
History
[edit]Bazardžani Street is among the oldest in Sarajevo, believed to have been established around 1460, shortly after Isa Bey Ishaković founded the city.[2] During the Ottoman period, it was known as Kolobara Han Sokak, reflecting its connection to the nearby Kolobara Han.[3] With the onset of Austro-Hungarian rule in 1878, the street was renamed Put Kolobara.[4]
Landmarks
[edit]The street is notable for its proximity to several significant historical structures:
- Brusa Bezistan: An Ottoman-era covered market built in the 16th century, known for its distinctive architecture and historical importance.
- Kolobara Han: One of Sarajevo's earliest inns, serving as a resting place for travelers and traders during the Ottoman period.
These landmarks underscore Bazardžani Street's role in the commercial and social life of Sarajevo during its formative years.
Development
[edit]Over the centuries, Bazardžani Street has maintained its historical character, with its alignment and surrounding structures reflecting the city's Ottoman heritage. Its enduring presence offers insight into Sarajevo's urban development and the preservation of its cultural landmarks.[5]
