Aashiq Hussain Zaki (born 3 September 1976) is a mental health professional, social worker and part-time academic counsellor associated with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), based in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir. He serves as the Chairman of Civil Society Sopore, a civic group, and is the founder of RAAHAT, a mental health support initiative focused on emotional care and suicide prevention.
Zaki has worked as an academic counsellor in the IGNOU Master of Sociology (MSO) program for over twenty years. In this role, he has worked with students in rural and conflict-affected areas. He has also been involved in public education and awareness on topics such as women’s rights, mental health, and social services through programs, counselling, and events.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Zaki was born on 3 September 1976 in Khushall Matto, Sopore, to Ghulam Nabi Zaki and Shamema Zaki. He completed his early education in Sopore and Srinagar. He has one brother, Rouf Ahmad Zaki.
He attended:

- Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School, Jawahar Nagar, Srinagar (Class 11)

He completed a B.A. from Govt. Degree College Sopore, followed by an M.A. in Sociology and a B.Ed. from the University of Kashmir. He later completed an M.A. in Political Science from IGNOU.
Career
[edit]From 2001 to 2010, Zaki worked as a contractual lecturer in sociology. In 2011, he worked with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) as a mental health counsellor.
In 2012, he launched RAAHAT, a mental health initiative focusing on emotional well-being and suicide prevention in Kashmir. He has also served as an academic counsellor with IGNOU, particularly in the Master of Sociology program.
Civil Society Work
[edit]Zaki is the Chairman of Civil Society Sopore, a group working on public welfare and governance. The organization has conducted activities in education, drug awareness, and mental health.
He participated in World Suicide Prevention Day 2024, presenting on "Gatekeeper Training for Suicide Prevention in Kashmir."
Community Engagement and Awareness Campaigns
[edit]On the International Day Against Drug Abuse, Zaki spoke at an event promoting collaboration among police, administration, and medical professionals to address drug addiction. He emphasized the need for awareness among teenagers.
During Drug De-Addiction Week (April 29 to May 5), he coordinated a roadshow in Sopore with RAAHAT and civil society members. The rally highlighted concerns over youth drug use and called for joint community action.
Zaki has worked with police and local administration on anti-drug initiatives. Civil Society Sopore issued a statement recognizing a police operation in Baramulla that dismantled a heroin network.
He has also participated in events like World Mental Health Day and promoted mental health awareness through training programs.
