8,5x63 is a Continental Europe Rifle caliber.

In metric system classification, 8.5mm (about .338" in Imperial system) describes ogive diameter, 63mm stands for the case length.

Available in non-rimmed (rebated rimless - for bolt-action rifles) and rimmed (R) version for "express" (double-barrels) and kipplauf (single shot rifle); barrels in this caliber are produced in Strasser and Blaser factories, in very limited numbers.

Its kinetic energy is neatly superior to 7x64 and .30-06, slightly inferior to .338 Winchester Magnum, but can approach it with proper loading; can give performances comparable to .338-06 with mild loads. Loaded with semiprogressive powders, expresses good velocities in mid-length barrels (53-58cm) and on medium distance shots.

Almost exclusively used in central EU (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Northern Italy) for class 2-3 game in "battue" or pirsch (red deer, wild boar, moose), erratic availability of ammunition and reloading gear limit its diffusion.

Original ammunition is produced and distributed by Brenneke (TAG bullet - 190grs, or TOG - 225grs.) and SAX munitions GmbH (Lutz Möller's KJG monolithic bullet, 9g).

cases can be fireformed from 30-06, 280 Rem, 7x64, .35Whelen for rimless barrels, or from 7x65R for rimmed version.
