Position of the Upper Hutt within Greater Wellington

The 2025 Upper Hutt City Council election will take place between 9 September and 11 October 2025 by postal vote as part of nation-wide local elections.

The first past the post system will be used to elect the Mayor of Upper Hutt, city councillors and Rimutaka Licensing Trust trustees for the 2025–2028 term.[1]

In November 2023, the Upper Hutt City Council had voted by six to five to introduce a Māori ward for the 2025 and 2028 elections.[2] However, following a change in legislation regarding Māori wards, the council voted in August 2024 to rescind this decision. It thus avoided a requirement to hold a referendum on retaining the ward alongside this election.[3][4]
