Zhomart Mine
Appearance
Zhomart Mine is a copper mine located in the Karaganda Region of central Kazakhstan. It is operated by Kazakhmys, a major copper producer in Central Asia. The mine reopened in 2025 after a temporary closure and has since drawn public attention due to both its production potential and workplace safety concerns.[1]
History
[edit]Zhomart was one of several copper deposits operated by Kazakhmys and was previously active until an operational pause in the early 2020s. The mine resumed production in 2025 as part of a strategic relaunch of key regional assets.[1]
Safety incident
[edit]On February 2025, a methane explosion at the Zhomart Mine killed seven workers and led to a full investigation by Kazakh authorities.[2][3][4]
