Yasutaka Nakasone (Japanese: 中曽根康隆; born 19 January 1982) is a Japanese politician serving as a member of the House of Representatives since 2017.[1] He was Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense under Prime Minister Fumio Kishida from 2021 to 2022.[2] From 2024 to now, he serves as director of the LDP Youth Division.[3] He is the son of Hirofumi Nakasone and a grandson of Yasuhiro Nakasone.[4]

Early Life

[edit]

Yasutaka Nakasone was born in 1982 and raised in Tokyo. [5] He is the son of Hirofumi Nakasone, a member of the House of Councillors and is a grandson of former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone. He studied abroad in the US for a year during his high school days.[6] He received his bachelor of Law degree in Keio University and he also studied in international politics in the university.[6] He was engaged in playing golf in the golf team of both the high school and the university.[6] He received his master's degree in political science from Columbia University.[5] After the graduation, he started to work at JPMorgan Chase in Tokyo.[6] While working in the firm, Yasutaka gradually had an idea to become a politician for a better future of Japan.[6] After six years' work, he quitted the job and became a private secretary of his father who was a member of the House of Councillors . By supporting his father’s political activities, he prepared for his next career in Tokyo and in Gunma Prefecture(Nakasone Family’s home town and there was formerly the constituency of his grandfather) for four years.[6] Apart from other Japanese hereditary politicians taking over the constituency without difficulties, Yasutaka almost paved a new way as a politician. At first, his father’ s opposition blocked his career plan, because his father was fully aware of politician's hard life. However, he tried to persuade his father, and finally his resignation from the firm led his father to agree to his idea and hire him a private secretary.[6]

Political Career

[edit]

Yasutaka Nakasone was first time elected to the House of Representatives in the 2017 general election, on the Northern Kanto proportional representation block list for the Liberal Democratic Party.[7] Before the general election in 2017, Yasutaka Nakasone submitted his application to the Gunma Office of Liberal Democratic Party for a candidate of the House of Representatives, representing the Gunma 1st district. [8]However, his request was rejected because the other person was still decided. Afterwards, he could receive a candidate post on the Northern Kanto proportional representation block list for the Liberal Democratic Party at the 2017 Japanese general election. [9]

In 2021, Yasutaka won the candidate race for the Liberal Democratic Party, representing the Gunma 1st district, due to the positive results in the opinion poll.[10] He was elected to the House of Representatives in the 2021 general election and in the 2024 general election, representing the Gunma 1st district. [11][12]

He was Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense under Prime Minister Fumio Kishida from November 11, 2021 to August 12, 2022.[13]

From November 15, 2024 to now, he serves as director of the LDP Youth Division under Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.[14]
