He is a leading expert in robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and space technology, and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). Xu served as the founding president of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) from 2013 to 2023 and is currently serving his second term.[1]
Education
[edit]Xu was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, China. He earned his bachelor's degree in Aircraft Engineering from Zhejiang University in 1981. He also received a master's degree in engineering (MEng) from Zhejiang University. Later, he moved to the United States, where he obtained his Ph.D. (1989) in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Pennsylvania.[2]
Academic career
[edit]After obtaining his Ph.D. Xu conducted research at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), where he worked on NASA-funded space robotics projects.[3] In 1997, he joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as a professor, specializing in intelligent systems and automation, and later served as Director of the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science, contributing to advancements in robotics and AI. His expertise laid the foundation for his leadership in higher education and innovation.
Leadership
[edit]During his tenure as the founding president of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (2013–2023), Xu oversaw the establishment and development of the institution. He implemented an internationalized curriculum model and fostered academic collaborations with overseas universities. The university expanded its research programs, particularly in fields such as artificial intelligence and robotics, while maintaining connections with industry partners. Under his administration, the institution recruited faculty members with international research backgrounds and developed its campus infrastructure in Shenzhen. These developments contributed to the university's positioning within China's higher education landscape and the Greater Bay Area's innovation ecosystem.[4]
