Wilson Grove is located in Sonoma County, California, United States.[1] It contains rock formations and a grove of redwood trees.[2][3] Wilson Grove is located near California's Russian River, west of Windsor, California; since the 1920s, Wilson Grove has been used for camps and outings.[3][4]

By 1922, mollusc fossils had been discovered and analyzed in Wilson Grove, which up to the 1970s was considered as part of the Merced Formation.[5][6][7] Scientific studies of the rock formations at Wilson Grove began by 1952, and eventually by 1988 provided evidence that around 4 million years ago, there was a shallow sea covering Sonoma County, which was named as the Wilson Grove Sea, distinct from the Merced Sea covering San Francisco during that time.[8][9] In 1983, the rock formations at Wilson Grove were named as the Wilson Grove Formations, which extends to the wider Sonoma County and enters a part of Marin County, California.[7]
