Issue accessing a source

[edit]

I'm struggling to access the article at https://www-tandfonline-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.1080/13642529.2014.913941 (The Palestinian refugee camps: the promise of ‘ruin’ and ‘loss’ by Fatina Abreek-Zubiedat)

When I click "Read this article" I am redirected to: Log in via your institution / Access through your institution.

Any help appreciated, thank you. IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 07:10, 4 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reporting this. We do not have access to all journals from T&F. I have written to them for clarification, will update you as soon as we hear back. - VSj (WMF) (talk) 15:33, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This access should be working now. Please let me know if you're still facing any issues. VSj (WMF) (talk) 12:55, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, thank you. IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 15:44, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

T&F cannot be accessed anymore

[edit]

It seems that Tylor & Francis Online papers which had access via Wikipedia Library before, are not accessible anymore. Example: https://www-tandfonline-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.1080/02724634.2014.925909 Ta-tea-two-te-to (talk) 03:25, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Taylor & Francis Wikipedia library proxy seems to have expired and no longer gives access to closed access papers (e.g. https://www-tandfonline-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.1080/08912963.2016.1241248 ). Can't remember where to report this on the Wikipedia Library itself, so hopefully someone else can do that. Hemiauchenia (talk) 03:25, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops merged these two duplicate threads. Hemiauchenia (talk) 03:27, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Our access has been restored. Let me know if you're still facing any issues. Thanks! VSj (WMF) (talk) 12:56, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reference flagging resolving

[edit]

I was wondering how to resolve a blanket message I see when using "newspaperarchive-com" via The Wikipedia Library to add references to articles. To provide an example, if you look at reference number 6 of the Crumbles murders article, you can see that a portion of the reference has flagged an alert for using TWL as a reference ("Wikipedia Library link in |url= (help)"). I have been using TWL from time to time since February to research and reference articles and, to the best of my knowledge, this "red flagging" of sections of references issue has only begun appearing in the last day or two. Can someone please advise me how to resolve this flagging? The references are verifiable and reliable. Thanks. Kieronoldham (talk) 19:07, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kieronoldham: Instead of linking https://access-newspaperarchive-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org....., you should link directly to the site, in this case, https://newspaperarchive.com...... ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 11:54, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked because of use of proxy

[edit]

Hello, I sent two emails to the Wikipedia Library team but got no responses. Whenever I try to access one of the sources I receive this message: You have tripped an automated security rule in EZProxy. Common reasons for this might be trying to download too many items in a short period of time or using a web proxy. Please contact the Wikipedia Library team at wikipedialibrary@wikimedia.org so this block can be reviewed.

I indeed do use a proxy, but that's just because I need one to gain access to a major part of the internet. Is it possible to review my block? Thanks. Amir Ghandi (talk) 09:46, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Amir Ghandi do you think iot would help if you got IP-block exemption? Fortuna, Imperatrix Mundi 10:04, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @Fortuna imperatrix mundi, thanks for the suggestion! I’ve submitted the appeal, and it was instantly closed with this message: "We were not able to locate your block. Please click the button below to correct the information in your appeal." Amir Ghandi (talk) 10:28, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Amir Ghandi. We can't locate your email I'm afraid. Could you share the date you sent the email? Please feel free to forward the thread to vipin@wikimedia.org if that's easier. Thanks. VSj (WMF) (talk) 08:53, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@VSj (WMF) I sent one in 26 May. Full disclosure, I am very embarrassed to see that I did receive a response on 27 May, but I swear I didn't get a notification about it. Amir Ghandi (talk) 14:48, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Please share further details on that email so we can look into it. Thanks! VSj (WMF) (talk) 08:39, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers.com

[edit]

Hi all, and thank you so much for your work on the amazing Wikipedia Library. In the new era of newspapers.com, after the original login account system, I was re-approved for newspapers.com but when I surf to WP:LIBRARY and click through, it launches newspapers.com and I'm logged in via my account I made when Wikipedia Library started, but I have no access. I see the button for "try 7 days free" while I'm logged in there, and nothing really works. BTW, I don't see how to request access to a new site.

  1. Can you fix my newspapers.com account?
  2. How do I request access to newspaperarchive.com?
  3. Is my newspapers.com username-and-password account obsolete or is it required in addition to authentication by surfing through WP:LIBRARY?
Smuckola(talk) 02:47, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
See this announcement - the account is required. Nikkimaria (talk) 02:55, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Nikkimaria: Okay so what about any of the rest of my post, like where I said it just doesn't work? And....the rest? In my Wikipedia Library collection, Newspapers.com says "Expiry date: Feb 02, 2026" and newspaperarchive has the "access collection" button so I guess it expired but it used to work. I'm logged into my original newspapers.com account that you set up for me in the earliest days, it has my username in the top right of the page, and yet nothing works, I can't access any content, and it has the "try 7 days free" button. I tried a "private window" in Firefox too, also browsing directly to newspapers.com, with the same result. — Smuckola(talk) 08:33, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If the Newspapers.com account hasn't expired yet, it should still work, but it's managed by Newspapers.com - you'd need to get in touch with their support if your account is not working. Newspaperarchive is a separate thing and should work by clicking on the 'access collection' button under Newspaperarchive. Nikkimaria (talk) 23:56, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Nikkimaria: OK I will contact newspapers.com.
Yeah I agree that newspaperarchive should work! :) So what now? Thanks! — Smuckola(talk) 01:20, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What do you see when you click on 'access collection' here and try to read an article? Nikkimaria (talk) 01:22, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Great Pendergast's ghost! It works. It works by the URL you gave and by browsing from scratch via WP:LIBRARY. I see "Welcome to NewspaperArchive Provided for you by Wikimedia Foundation" and I see pictures of dead trees from 1897! OK now I'm not sure why I was failing to get any search results the last several times I tried! lol, thanks. And the system-wide search is great, with EBSCO results and all.
I await a response from newspapers.com! Thank you to everyone for everything. — Smuckola(talk) 02:19, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Nikkimaria: Hooray, they set me at "Complimentary Publisher Extra® Annual" status and the account works now. Thanks. — Smuckola(talk) 01:40, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

SAGE and The BMJ can't be accessed anymore

[edit]

It seems that SAGE Journals dan the BMJ are no longer available for all The Wikipedia Library users Antya Anantari (talk) 04:24, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Antya Anantari: BMJ still works fine for me. See phab:T391570 for SAGE journals. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 17:27, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
My bad, The BMJ is working fine now after I change my browser Antya Anantari (talk) 01:24, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Locked out of Newspapers.com again

[edit]

I originally lost access to Newspapers.com when they changed the way they required us to log in. That was in February 2024, but I didn't report it at Phabricator until April 2024. In November I heard we could apply for access, so I did. Earlier this month I lost access again, even though my expiry date isn't until November 17. I reapplied, as you can see here. But I've heard NOTHING. What should I do? Newspapers.com is so vital for finding sources and also for establishing notability for articles. I'd be so grateful for help! Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 07:49, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Oona Wikiwalker - it is no longer possible to access newspapers.com via proxy, but if you have reapplied for access and have an approved date in the future, you just need to sign in at: https://www.newspapers.com/signin/?next_url=/? using the email associated with your Wikipedia account and a password. If you do not have a password, just click the forgot your password to create one. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 23:46, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Goldsztajn. Does that mean we can't log in from the library anymore? I've had a free Newspapers.com account via my Ancestry.com account for years before I came to Wikipedia. That account uses my genealogy email address. I can't clip articles with that account. I never use it because all my genealogical research is in Europe anyway.
When I try to sign in to Newspapers.com with the email I use for Wikipedia and follow your instructions, I don't get an email.
Before a few weeks ago, I was able to use Newspapers.com just fine. I would be really grateful for help! Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 10:23, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How to pick the right database to search?

[edit]

A while ago I was looking through all the help pages here trying to get access The Financial Review (Australian newspaper). I ended up emailing someone with private access.

However, the access was available all along by opening the ProQuest database in TWL and searching (no extra sign-up through newspapers.com required). There are great articles from other newspapers there too.

How was I meant to know to use ProQuest, is there a help page or index for dummies somewhere? It seems similar to the question about about how to find Lancet articles on meta; you search the Science Direct database I think.

P.S. @Oona Wikiwalker: you may have some luck with a ProQuest search while you wait for your newspapers.com issue to be resolved. Commander Keane (talk) 00:26, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I often use the Zeitschriftendatenbank to look for a particular scholarly journal. But as this database focuses on German and Austrian library holdings perhaps it isn't the right tool for your specific use case. HHill (talk) 09:13, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Newspaper.com account

[edit]

Hi,

I applied for access to Newspapers.com and received an email last month saying that I was approved and would receive access details "within a week or two once it has been processed." Newspapers.com shows up as a resource under my collections and shows an expiry date for next year, but when I go to access the resource, it's just the standard page with "free trial" and "sign up" at the top. What am I missing? Spagooder (talk) 20:48, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Spagooder - you can no longer access newspapers.com via proxy - once you have had an account approved you just need to sign in using the email address associated with your Wikipedia account. If you need a password, just use the forgot your password button. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 23:41, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

De Gruyter

[edit]

I understand there's an access problem with this source, is there anything I can do to help? It's the database I use most often. (t · c) buidhe 05:48, 28 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It would be absolutely great if access to De Gruyter could be restored following its merger with Brill. In practice, losing De Gruyter means losing access to a third of the papers/books I use TWL for. —Kusma (talk) 13:24, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Should be fixed now. This was tracked at phab:T372402 ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 01:00, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
