Template:Regiments by number
[edit]Just FYI, {{Regiments by number}} has been added to a slew of disambiguation pages by +JMJ+ adding all the pages to this list in the process. Seems to me the template goes against guidance at WP:DABICON. older ≠ wiser 11:50, 22 April 2025 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Disambiguation pages#When to ignore the guidelines:
ignore these guidelines if doing so will be more helpful to readers than following them.
- The point of the template was to help readers orient themselves between the disambiguation pages and jump between them easier/faster. All of the regimental disambiguation pages are now more of a web. The very standard naming of all the disambiguation pages also lent itself for such a template, which would fit all of them so easily. Also, so far, in the page history, three different editors constructively added to the template without voicing criticism against its very existence, which would indicate to me that such a template is more helpful to readers than not. +JMJ+ (talk) 21:46, 22 April 2025 (UTC)
- Disambiguation pages are specifically for aiding navigation regarding the ambiguous title in question and getting readers where they already intended to go, and the template links to a large assortment of pages that are not ambiguous with the title of the page. I could, perhaps, see a link in a "see also" section to a List of regiments by number if that existed, but such a page might also just be deleted under WP:NOT as a granfalloon; maybe a link to "intitle:1st Regiment" results would be appropriate. A reader using the 1st Regiment disambiguation page to navigate to 1st Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery does not have any more need of a link to 119th Regiment than to 1st Division (Australia), Australian Army, or any assortment of other links that are regularly excluded from inclusion on a dab page, which has always been intended to focus on getting readers from meta material to content through maximizing simplicity. This is a hidden disambiguation, in the sense that it's a general article about the several such schools in France, but almost all the links in articles actually mean Beaux-Arts de Paris. Colonies Chris (talk) 13:12, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
Cycling races
[edit]Dear fellow DPL warriors - I am aware that there are now hundreds of links to the newly-created disambiguation pages Amstel Gold Race, Brabantse Pijl and Tour of Flanders, all as a result of my closing an RM. I am working through them slowly and as ever your help is appreciated. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 11:28, 6 June 2025 (UTC)

This concept needs a name
[edit]I would like to propose Switchboard or some similar reference to manual telephone routing as a bit of shorthand for this patrol's purpose, as there's no existing term for this relatively complex process (that honestly isn't super well articulated in "Disambiguation pages with links", as "links" may well be interpreted as the various destination pages that all DABs are expected to have) as well as an issue that a lot of Wikipedia contributors may not be aware of. The switchboard metaphor is quite effective at communicating the idea of "routing a vague link to its correct destination" while also making it more obvious to editors, through the real-world association, that they should be aware of these dangling references and make an effort to check and reroute all links themselves so that a "switchboard operator" doesn't need to do it afterwards. More Information Needed
[edit]Articles that can't be redirected as there isn't enough specificity in the article itself.
Punjab University - Mirajul Haq Deobandi (neither article sources nor his online research page specify)
Posen - Zeppelin LZ 49 (presumably indicated in the source provided, but I couldn't find the book. presumably Reichsgau Posen, but also may be Poznań)
Politics of Korea - People's Republic of Korea, League of Mobilization in Korea (actual link to the DAB not found?)
More doubtless coming soon. Catgirl Mozart (talk) 16:13, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- The second one is Poznań, per the German article from which the enwiki article was translated. (Also Reichsgau Posen didn't exist in 1915.)
- The links in the third item are produced by infobox templates that automatically generate links based on the article title or other fields in the infobox, so they often produce dab-page links (e.g. "[Topic] in Korea", that links to a dab page that has links to "[Topic] in North Korea" and "[Topic] in South Korea") that can't be fixed in the article itself.
- You might find useful the gadget that displays ambiguous links in orange. You can find it in your preferences tab: Preferences > Gadgets > scroll down to Appearance. —ShelfSkewed Talk 17:08, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

- "Bengali Wedding" has been stuck for 4+ months simply because there doesn't exist a standalone page for "Marriage in Bangladesh", and all references to it redirect here. The creation of a separate page for this topic would solve the issue - someone in the Talk page has already started it Catgirl Mozart (talk) 00:23, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
