Wikipedia:WikiProject Finland/Assessment

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Welcome to the Assessment Department of WikiProject Finland! This is where we focus on assessing and tracking the evolving quality of Wikipedia's Finland-related articles. While much of the work is done in conjunction with the Wikipedia v1.0 Editorial Team, the article quality and importance ratings are also used within our project to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying the topics most in need of further work.

The ratings are done in a distributed fashion by any editor wishing to take the time to make them, and are recorded through parameters in the {{WikiProject Finland}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate subcategories of Finland articles by quality and Finland articles by importance, which together represent the feedstock for our algorithmically generated worklist.

Frequently asked questions

[edit]

If you have made significant changes to an article and would like an outside opinion for it, please consider requesting a project member to reassess it.

How can I get my article rated?
You can request an article assessment at Wikipedia:Peer review, or you can ping any active member of the project and ask them to grade the article.
Who can assess articles?
Any editor or member of WikiProject Finland is free to add or change the rating of an article (per the criteria, of course) on their own, except for the FA, A or GA-Classes, which require a more independent and thorough peer review ending in formal consensus.
Why didn't the reviewer leave any comments?
Unfortunately, due to the volume of articles that need to be assessed, we are unable to leave detailed comments in most cases. If you have particular questions, you should ask the person who assessed the article directly; they will usually be willing to provide you with more insight into their reasoning.
What if I don't agree with a rating?
You can request a peer review or ping an active project member to weigh in using the links above.
Aren't the ratings subjective?
Yes, they are, but it's the best system we've been able to devise; if you have a better idea, please don't hesitate to let us know!

If you have any other questions not listed here, please feel free to ask them on the discussion page for this department.

Quality assessment

[edit]

An article's quality assessment is recorded using the |class= parameter in the {{WikiProject banner shell}}. Articles that have the {{WikiProject Finland}} banner template on their talk page will be added to the appropriate categories by quality.

The following standard grades may be used to describe the quality of mainspace articles (see Wikipedia:Content assessment for assessment criteria):

FA (for featured articles only; adds them to the FA-Class Finland articles category)  FA
FL (for featured lists only; adds them to the FL-Class Finland articles category)  FL
A (for articles that passed a formal peer review only; adds them to the A-Class Finland articles category)  A
GA (for good articles only; adds them to the GA-Class Finland articles category)  GA
B (for articles that satisfy all of the B-Class criteria; adds them to the B-Class Finland articles category) B
C (for substantial articles; adds them to the C-Class Finland articles category) C
Start (for developing articles; adds them to the Start-Class Finland articles category) Start
Stub (for basic articles; adds them to the Stub-Class Finland articles category) Stub
List (for stand-alone lists; adds them to the List-Class Finland articles category) List
NA (for any other pages where assessment is unwarranted; adds them to the NA-Class Finland pages category) NA
??? (articles for which a valid class has not yet been provided are listed in the Unassessed Finland articles category) ???

For non-mainspace content, the following values may be used:

FM (for featured media only; adds them to the FM-Class Finland pages category)  FM
Category (for categories; adds them to the Category-Class Finland pages category) Category
Draft (for drafts; adds them to the Draft-Class Finland pages category) Draft
File (for files and timed text; adds them to the File-Class Finland pages category) File
Portal (for portal pages; adds them to the Portal-Class Finland pages category) Portal
Project (for project pages; adds them to the Project-Class Finland pages category) Project
Template (for templates and modules; adds them to the Template-Class Finland pages category) Template

The following non-standard assessment grades for mainspace content may be used at a WikiProject's discretion:

Disambig (for disambiguation pages; adds them to the Disambig-Class Finland pages category) Disambig
Redirect (for redirect pages; adds them to the Redirect-Class Finland pages category) Redirect

After assessing an article's quality, any comments on the assessment can be added to the article's talk page.

Importance assessment

[edit]

An article's importance assessment is generated from the importance parameter in the {{WikiProject Finland}} project banner on its talk page:

{{WikiProject Finland|importance=???}}

The following values may be used for the importance parameter to describe the relative importance of the article within the project (see Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Priority of topic for assessment criteria):

Top (adds articles to Category:Top-importance Finland articles)  Top
High (adds articles to Category:High-importance Finland articles)  High
Mid (adds articles to Category:Mid-importance Finland articles)  Mid
Low (adds articles to Category:Low-importance Finland articles)  Low
NA (adds articles to Category:NA-importance Finland articles)  NA
??? (articles for which a valid importance rating has not yet been provided are listed in Category:Unknown-importance Finland articles)  ???

As with quality, after assessing an article's importance any comments on the assessment can be added to the article's talk page.

  1. ^ For example, this image of the Battle of Normandy is grainy, but very few pictures of that event exist. However, where quite a number of pictures exist, for instance, the moon landing, FPC attempts to select the best of the ones produced.
  2. ^ An image has more encyclopedic value (often abbreviated to "EV" or "enc" in discussions) if it contributes strongly to a single article, rather than contributing weakly to many. Adding an image to numerous articles to gain EV is counterproductive and may antagonize both FPC reviewers and article editors.
  3. ^ While effects such as black and white, sepia, oversaturation, and abnormal angles may be visually pleasing, they often detract from the accurate depiction of the subject.
  4. ^ Prose at the Good Article level is not expected to be at a professional level like it is for Featured Articles. Minor grammatical or style issues that do not impact clarity are not prohibitive of GA status.
