From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Date: 2 August - 30 September, 2025

In 2025, ACWP+film’s anchor edit-a-thon campaign will run during August and September. Singularly focused on Wikipedia, the campaign aims to generate substantive and quality contributions on African Film and Television in English, French, Arabic, and African language Wikipedia. A key objective of the campaign is to improve existing articles, in addition to creating new ones.

Prior to the campaign, a series of workshops will be conducted aimed at both new and experienced Wikimedians to learn the essentials of contributing Film and Television content to Wikipedia. To accommodate as many people as possible, including those from the diaspora, multiple options to attend a workshop are offered:

  • Online Wikipedia workshops in English, French, and Arabic.
  • In-person Wikipedia workshops led by local Wikimedia organizers in over 20 cities around the continent and the diaspora.

FESPACO Edit-a-thon

[edit]

Date: Saturday, May 18 - June 17, 2024

AfroCreatives WikiProject is partnering with FESPACO, Africa’s largest film festival, in a continent-wide Edit-a-thon.

In the lead-up to the campaign, participants are encouraged to join online and/or in-person training sessions to learn how to contribute to Wikipedia, or if already familiar with editing Wikipedia, to refresh their skills. To accommodate as many people as possible, the following is scheduled:

  • Two “global” online training sessions in each of 3 languages (English, French, Arabic).
  • A series of local online and in-person training sessions led by local Wikipedia organizers around the continent.

In addition to a general training session focused on Wikipedia:

  • A training session (in French, Arabic, and English) focused on Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata, two affiliated projects within the Wikimedia family. For participants within the film industry with rights to images, here’s why Wikimedia Commons is especially relevant to you.

New to editing Wikimedia?

[edit]

If you are new to contributing to Wikimedia projects, we strongly encourage you to sign up for training session when you register to participate in the campaign. The sessions, led by experienced Wikimedians, will provide basic and essential editing know-how that will make it easy for you to participate in the campaign.

Watch this space for more information on training sessions that will take place online and in person in cities throughout Africa in May as part of the FESPACO campaign.

Campaign rules

[edit]
  • All participants must create a Wikimedia account and be signed in before making any edits.
  • All Wikipedia edits made must have #ACWPFESPACO2024 in the edit summary to be considered for any prize
  • If you’re a Wikimedian, make sure you are registered on your local Wikimedia community dashboard if your community is organizing, and if you’re a film professional, sign up to the global ACWP+film dashboard so your edits can be tracked as part of the campaign.
  • All contributions as part of the campaign must follow or be related to the theme of the campaign, African film and television. Editing Articles outside this scope will not count.
  • Double/multiple performances of one task as several edits on an article count as one edit. For example, fixing two different typos over two different edits on an article counts as one edit, not two.
  • Points are not given when an edit is made to correct a previous edit by the same participant.
  • Responses to messages on talk pages and reverted edits do not count as an edit.

FESPACO resources

[edit]
[edit]

As part of the Fespaco edit-a-thon, we are undertaking a special initiative to expand and create new content about the festival on Wikipedia. Here you will find FESPACO resources to facilitate your contributions. How exactly can you contribute? Every film festival of note should have a main article, as well as an individual article for each edition that has taken place. This is FESPACO’s main article that you can edit however you deem necessary and here is the article for the 28th Edition, its most recent edition held in 2023, which you can also enhance. All the other editions, held bi-annually dating back to 1969, require a new article to be created (as of April 2024). In addition to information that is widely available, you can access here resources provided by FESPACO and categorized by edition.
