Rice price crisis

[edit]

If the 米騒動 article at the Japanese Wikipedia should have a companion here at the English Wikipedia, I think the time is now. I don't know how should it be titled in English, but may I suggest either "Rice price crisis", "Rice shortage crisis", "Rice riot" or "Kome sōdō"?

Accordingly, the Rice riots of 1993 article could be retitled as 1993 Japanese rice price crisis, and the article about the ongoing rice crisis could be titled as the 2024–2025 Japanese rice price crisis. --183.101.53.185 (talk) 10:46, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Signatures in infoboxes of articles about Japanese Imperial Family members

[edit]

Should Wikipedia be using File:ReiwaShinsho.svg in the main infobox of Naruhito if it's not actually something created by the hand of the Emperor himself. The same thing applies to File:Empress Masako signature.svg, File:Fumihito's signature.png, File:Showa shomei.svg and File:Heisei shomei.svg, being used respectively in Empress Masako, Fumihito, Crown Prince of Japan, Hirohito and Akihito. If these are just someone's recreation of a Japanese Imperial Family member's signature, then I'm not sure Wikipedia should be using since it could be mistakenly assumed they're authentic signatures. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:49, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Short answer: no. This really is bizarre stuff: the infobox says "Huaya:" (the Chinese reading of 花押) followed by a vector graphic depiction of the characters (徳仁) for Naruhito, to which a user with no user page claims copyright on the basis of "own work". The article huaya is ludicrous, in a self-explanatory sort of way, with a "clarify" tag on the expression "...in place of a true signature". Imaginatorium (talk) 14:10, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I realize that something signed in kanji is different that something using the Latin alphabet or cursive; so, one might try to argue that c:Commons:When to use the PD-signature tag wouldn't necessarily apply if the signature was considered creative; however, these mainly appear to be user recreations and not genuine signatures, which to makes them more fan art than not. Pretty much anyone skilled enough at shodo could re-create any combination of kanji characters like a name, but such things shouldn't really be used in Wikipedia articles about any person as their signature. The files above were all uploaded to Commons and are being used in many different language Wikipedias; I realize we can't really sort all of that out here, but we can sort out whether they should be being used on English Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:21, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's quite messy: the file for Masako-sama actually is a signature, taken from a photo on a newspaper site, and the same photo includes the signature of the Emperor. I don't see why the latter could not also be used. The Commons link you give is all about copyright, and is largely irrelevant, except for the apparent claim to copyright ("own work" [sic!]) claim on the file. I propose to remove the "Huaya" reference as marginal, since it is just someone's construction of what they believe the Emperor might write on some sort of document, and as confusing, since it looks awfully like a "signature", even if no-one really knows what "Huaya" means.
Actually, I think the commons file should be deleted: it is being used all over the place with the false implication or explicit claim that it is the Emperor's "signature" (signatur in Norwegian, for example). I don't really "do" commons, though, and don't know how to go about that. Imaginatorium (talk) 13:35, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Imaginatorium: You can go to those Commons pages, use the tools dropdown menu, and nominate them for deletion with your evidence. :-) Ed [talk] [OMT] 18:24, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion about improving "non-obvious queer articles" within Wiki Loves Pride project

[edit]

There is currently a discussion going on here about whether to include "non-obvious queer articles", including those about Japanese animated series (i.e. anime), in listings for Wiki Loves Pride and adding the appropriate template. Your input would be deeply appreciated. Historyday01 (talk) 17:41, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
