From 7 to 11 July 2025 the 9th edition of the intensive course on Science, technology, society and Wikipedia for PhD students will be run by the Polytechnic University of Milan in collaboration with Wikimedia Italia.

Mission and goals

The course aims to provide some hands-on training in technical writing and, at the same time, to contribute to the general diffusion of scientific and technical knowledge. This will be achieved by engaging Politecnico's Ph.D. students in the production of new material (or improvement of existing material) for Wikipedia.

Attendees are PhD students in various science and technology degrees, in particular engineering, architecture and industrial design. They will write articles in English or Italian.

What we do

Each student was required to produce one complete Wikipedia article or more in English and/or Italian. The choice of the language was by the student.

As alternative to the creation of a new article (preferred choice), it was possible to produce extensions to one or more existing articles. The bare translation of an article was not considered sufficient.

The articles were chosen during the first/second day in agreement with the teachers.

New articles were developed in individual sandboxes. The full articles had to be published by the morning of the last day of the course (11 July).

Additionally, every student has to review at least 3 articles by other students.
