Mammal list #52 in our perpetual series and bat list #11: Phyllostomidae, or the leaf-nosed bats. With 203 species, this our last big bat species list, with tons of species from all over South and Central America. These include the well-known vampire bats, as well as a bunch with odd nose shapes. I thought this would be the last list before the capstone list, but after a review there's a couple small families that have just enough species to get a list that I'll do first. As always, this list reflects formatting discussions from prior lists as well as the scientific consensus on the family. Thanks for reviewing! --PresN 19:39, 17 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]- Under "Classification" the sentence "The [family] [Phyllostomidae] consists of" seems like a MOS:SOB violation
- Rearranged
- Under "Classification" in the opening paragraph [Phyllostomidae] is linked and then it is linked again in the pseudo header. The second link seems like a MOS:DUPLINK violation
- Unlinked
- Under "Classification" the numbers of subspecies should be sourced
- No subspecies are listed, do you mean species? That's just counting the rows in the tables.
- I'm unfamiliar with these lists but shouldn't the ranges be more specific? For instance Brown flower bat's range is listed as "Caribbean" despite just being Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, while Buffy flower bat is also listed as "Caribbean" despite just being Cuba and Jamica
- Ultimately animal ranges only tangentially correspond with national boundaries, so I don't get bogged down in the precise countries unless its two or fewer. I'll change Brown flower bat to "Puerto Rico and island of Hispaniola", but Buffy flower bat actually isn't Cuba and Jamaica- it's also in the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands.
- Under both "Orcés's long-tongued bat" and "Giovanni's big-eared bat" Ecuador is linked as the range. I don't believe the location is linked anywhere else. Is their a reason for this?
- Unlinked the second instance
- "Great stripe-faced bat" and "Greater stripe-faced bat" use the same map with different colors. The description says "location (in color)". Why not just use seperate maps?
- Because I don't make the maps, I just use what's already available. --PresN 21:21, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
- Map has been split into two. -- Reconrabbit 18:24, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
- That's what I found ping me when done. Questions? four Olifanofmrtennant (she/her) 06:10, 21 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

- I would unlink the other Ecuador link or add links to them other locations Questions? four Olifanofmrtennant (she/her) 00:43, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
- @OlifanofmrTennant: Unlinked, but the idea was that Ecuador is linked on its first appearance; the tables aren't sortable so there is a "first". --PresN 00:52, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey man im josh
[edit]- Source review:
- Reliable enough for the information being cited
- Consistent date formatting
- Consistent and proper reference formatting
- Appropriate wikilinks where applicable
- Spot checks on 20 sources match what they are being cited for

[edit]I may have to pick at this article very slowly as upon first glance nothing obvious is jumping out at me but I'll give it a try
- Any reason why savannas is wikilinked but not grasslands or wetlands?
- "primarily eat a variety of insects" I feel like "variety" is a needed here but also not convinced this wording is wrong in any way.
I'll come back to this one and hopefully be able to give more feedback. Ping me whenever you're able to respond to my feedback. IntentionallyDense (Contribs) 20:21, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
- @IntentionallyDense: - linked all three and removed "a variety of". --PresN 17:47, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
- I'll attempt more of a review, forgive me if this is overly nitpicky as I don't see many major violations however seeing as this article is lacking substantial reviews I am a bit more motivated than usual to provide feedback.
- and part of the microbat would "and is..." be more grammatically correct here?
- Done
- I noticed that you noted that population estimates are not available for most of this family but then went on to say with a population as low as 250 mature individuals.. Is this one of the rare species that does have a population estimate? also I'm not sure if saying "around 250" would be redundant as you already established that these are estimates but it is something to think about.
- Yeah, the Jamaican flower bat does have an estimate (of 250). Added "around".
- I'm not sure if it is frowned upon to put wikilinks in the names of species but "Capixaba" may benefit from a wikilink, especially because the page itself is a dab
- Yeah, typically in this kind of list you wouldn't link out to explain why a species is named what it is, but instead leave that up to the species article (which does explain)
- Just wanted to confirm that there is no difference in size, population, or habitat for the two subspecies of Geoffroy's tailless bat
- Same with Antillean fruit-eating bat, Greater long-tailed bat, Brown flower bat, Buffy flower bat, Commissaris's long-tongued bat, Miller's long-tongued bat, Pallas's long-tongued bat, Western long-tongued bat, Underwood's long-tongued bat, and others
- Yep, the characteristics are given for the species as a whole, which encapsulates all subspecies within it
- Any reason why "Unknown forearm length" has a capital when there is no period following it and the other forearm lengths don't have capitals?
- Fixed
- I noticed Caves is plural while forest and savanna is singular, any reason for this?
- That's the way the IUCN lists them, not sure why
- Is there a reason why you wikilinked Peru and Panama (and possibly others I missed) which I believe is a country
- Previous FLCs where reviewers have asked for links for less universally-known countries
- Is there a reason why some of the habitats have maps and others don't?
- I'm largely beholden to what maps people have made before for species; I don't make the maps.
- I believe that's all I can really contribute here. Hopefully I did this list justice. I really enjoyed all the visual elements! A lot of my feedback is more questions than suggestions but I'm not too familiar with such technical lists. IntentionallyDense (Contribs) 00:25, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Image review by Reconrabbit
[edit]I've not done one of these before so please let me know if there are any obvious screw-ups.
- All images have alt text (most of which are "brown bat")
- File:Artibeus sp. Tortuguero National Park crop.jpg - GNU/CC-BY-SA 3.0/CC-BY 2.5
- That is odd.
- Strange discrepancy on image size where there's no image for Red fruit bat - presumably because it's one of the few articles that has a non-free image, so understandably not included here
- Yeah, I generate the tables with a script (which grabbed the image), but then it got pulled out for that reason.
- File:Desmo-Flug-01.jpg: source File:Desmo-Flug-01.tif states "This work was given to me by author for use".
- Removed.
- File:Dyoungi.jpg has uncertain provenance, since the original uploader has only 4 edits, but can't find anything earlier than 2010.
- Removed.
- File:Leptonycteris nivalis.jpg improperly structured information page, but license appropriate (FWS)
- Updated.
- File:Sturnira tildae 2.jpg has unclear permission
- Removed.
- Other images have appropriate licenses appear in cells near relevant items
- All I have for now. -- Reconrabbit 18:00, 14 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
