Weightlifting at the 1959 Pan American Games

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Weightlifting at the 1959 Pan American Games was contested at Chicago Vocational High School in Chicago, Illinois, as part of the III Pan American Games held from August 27 to September 7, 1959. The competition featured seven men’s weight classes, from bantamweight (–56 kg) to heavyweight (+90 kg). Medals were awarded in each division, with athletes from countries including the British West Indies (notably Grantley Sobers, Maurice King, and Fred Marville) and the United States (featuring silver medalist Dave Ashman and others) among the top performers. The event followed standard Olympic-style lifts, contributing to the Pan American legacy of weightlifting, which has been part of the Games since their inception in 1951.
