The Provisional National Government of Vietnam (PNGV, Vietnamese: Chính phủ Lâm thời Quốc gia Việt Nam), was formed on 29 August 1945, by the Vietnam Revolutionary League (Việt Cách) in Móng Cái as an Chinese-backed provisional government opposing the government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) under President Ho Chi Minh.[1]
History
[edit]After Japan's surrender, the National Revolutionary Army was assigned the task of entering Indochina to disarm the Japanese. They supported a pro-Chinese Vietnamese nationalist named Nguyễn Hải Thần to establish an anti-communist government in Vietnam in opposition to Ho Chi Minh's government.[2] On August 29, 1945, Chinese forces under general Lu Han command entered Quảng Ninh province and occupied Móng Cái.
On May 7, 1946, the Viet Minh organized an operation to capture Móng Cái. With Chinese withdraw, Nguyen Hai Than was unable to resist, leading to the collapse of his government.
