Verity Drew Firth (born 8 March 2006) is a British actress[1], director[2], writer[3], poet[4], presenter[5][6][7], and model[8]. She began her career as a child actress in West End theatre[9], and has appeared in television[10], radio[11][12], independent films[13][14], and physical theatre[15]. Firth is a BAFTA-qualified filmmaker[16]
Early life and education
[edit]Firth was born in London and raised in Islington. She attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School[17], The BRIT School[18], and trained with Young Actors Theatre Islington[19]. She is a member of the National Youth Theatre[20].
Career
[edit]Firth made her professional debut at age five in the stage production of 1984[21]at the Playhouse Theatre[22] , directed by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan[23]. The immersive production[24] was known for its intense portrayal of Room 101[25][26]. She later portrayed Lucy[27], Greg Davies' niece, in the television series Man Down (Channel 4), and appeared as Rik Mayall's granddaughter.[28]
She has performed in stage[29] and opera[30][31][32][1] productions, including Madam Butterfly at the King's Head Theatre, earning praise for her presence, described as 'a delight' by The Express [33].
Firth began presenting as a child on KidsKnowBest,[34] interviewing notable figures such as Sir Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Ferguson, Denise Gough[35], Joe Cornish,[36] Rob Marshall and Lin-Manuel Miranda.[37]
At age 11, Firth began making short films, later founding her own production company[38]. Her work has been featured at international film festivals, including Raindance, where she was the youngest award-winning filmmaker and actress.[39] She was also highlighted as the youngest interviewed in the book Female Entrepreneurs: The Secrets of Their Success. [40][41][42]
In 2024, she performed in Gecko Theatre's physical company in From Here On[43], a production centred on social displacement and children's rights.
Awards and accolades
[edit]Firth was nominated for Best Supporting Actress[44] at the Jump Cuts Film Festival[45]. She has received two Jack Petchey Awards[46] and several accolades for her filmmaking[47][48]. Her appearance in the music video Whiplash led to a nomination for Best Video at the DNBA Awards[49].
Personal life
[edit]Firth is the great granddaughter of the late musician and environmentalist Richard Macphail, known for his long-standing relationship with the band Genesis[50].
In 2017, the Firth family survived a serious house fire caused by a faulty charger purchased online[51]. The incident drew national media attention[52][53] including on BBC's Close Calls: On Camera, highlighting fire safety and consumer protection.[54]
