Verdical Group, Inc. is an American sustainability consulting company founded in 2012.[1] The company provides sustainability consulting services for buildings, products, organizations, and events.[2][3][4][5] It was founded by Drew Shula in his Pasadena, California garage in response to the climate crisis,[6] as 40% of global carbon emissions come from buildings.[7] The name "Verdical" was created from the Latin root for "green" and the word "vertical", signifying the value created through green building strategies.[8]

The company is private and structured as a benefit corporation in the State of California.[9] Its headquarters is located at the LA Kretz Innovation Campus in downtown Los Angeles,[10] but also has offices in Pasadena, San Diego, and San Francisco.[11] Verdical Group has worked with high profile institutions such as NASA, Google, Johnson & Johnson, LAX, GE, Meta, and Apple.[12] Verdical Group has been featured in media including The Washington Post,[13] Architect Magazine,[14] Metropolis Magazine, Architectural Record, and USA Today.[15]

The firm's services include net zero consulting,[16][17] and U.S. Green Building Council LEED certification consulting, to reduce energy and water use in buildings.[18][19][20] They also provide WELL, Fitwel, Living Building Challenge and Envision certification consulting.[21] By 2018, their projects had seen nearly 3 million gallons of water saved, 24 million pounds of waste diverted & 9 million kilowatt-hours of energy saved.[22]

Verdical Group is a certified B Corporation, by third party B Lab, a certification program to measure a for-profit company's environmental and social performance.[23] The company is a member of the corporate giving program 1% for the Planet, donating at least 1% of total annual revenue, not just profit, to environmental nonprofits and has donated $183,198 as of 2023.[24]

Verdical Group achieved net positive operations by offsetting its annual carbon footprint, plus an additional 10%, back to the company's founding in 2012.[25] This includes all company operations encompassing impact areas such as company office space, employee travel, waste, and procurement.[26]

Verdical Group is a signatory of Amazon's Climate Pledge,[27] and does not accept money from fossil fuel companies. Verdical Group banks with "fossil free" banks including Beneficial State Bank, and the company's investment accounts are fully divested from fossil fuels, tobacco, prisons, and firearms.[28]

Net Zero Conference

[edit]

Verdical Group's founder, Drew Shula, also founded the Net Zero Conference[29] and associated Trailblazer Awards, through Verdical Group, in 2014.[30] Verdical Group produces the conference, which is the world's largest annual net zero building event,[31][32] as well as the largest green building event in all of California.[33] The conference focuses on carbon, climate, equity, ESG, net zero and resilience.[34] and has grown to 1,500 attendees from 54 countries and 45 U.S. states.[35]
