I have one question

Is the romanization of 天理神之打分場所 (a Tenrikyo-based new religion founded by Watanabe Yoso) Tenri Kami no Uchiwake Basho? I'm not so sure. And what does 打分 mean in Japanese? And thank you very much in advance. Komitsuki (talk) 17:22, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Komitsuki: That's an unusual name! In conventional contexts, 打分 is most likely pronounced dabun (the Chinese-derived pronunciation) if it's part of a name. I'm not sure what it means in this context, but 打 means hit, and 分 means split. Sounds like the name of the deity is 天理神之打分? You'd have to check with the group itself to see how this name is supposed to be pronounced and what it means, or you'd have to find a source that has the furigana / kanji reading for the group's name. However, religious groups in Japan often have unique ways of pronouncing kanji, such as Ananaikyō: 三五教 is supposed to be Sangokyō if we're using the conventional reading, but the group says it's Ananaikyō.

Roy Forbes (2005, footnote 101 on page 137) says it's 天理神之打開場所 Tenri Kami no Uchi-ake Basho. Another organization is 天理神之口明場所 Tenri Kami no Kuchi-ake Basho. And then there's 修養団捧誠会 Shūyōdan Hōseikai. Yenistardom (talk) 13:08, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that this book largely describes about 天理神之打分場所. It looks like it's a line of successor of Tenri Sanrinkō (天理三輪講), but with more interpretation from Buddhism, particularly the teachings of Maitreya (弥勒). See also this Yahoo! Japan's Q&A post.

My recent idea is that 打分 should be of a native Japanese reading and it could be 打ち分かる. 打ち that means "very, fully, deeply, completely" and 分かる that means "to understand". I think 天理神之打分場所 would mean "the place where the kami/god of Tenri (heavenly principle) is fully understood". By my attempt to understand this, I think the romanization could be Tenri Kami no Uchiwakari Basho, but I could be wrong.

By the way, I have plenty of sources to create articles for 天理神の打開場所 and 天理神之口明場所 in English. And I plan to talk about 天理神之打分場所 in the future article on 天理神の打開場所 as a tiny sidenote. Komitsuki (talk) 14:00, 10 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Komitsuki: Thanks, this is quite useful. It might be worth visiting the headquarters of some of these organizations to find out more about them. A lot can be learned by collecting books and touring their facilities if they let outsiders in. However, this isn't always doable, since Honmichi and Sekai Shindokyo and some others are notoriously secretive and refuse to let uninvited outsiders in.
