Hello @GreenLipstickLesbian
Thank you so much for the warm welcome and for sharing these useful resources! I'm already reading through them, and I really hope to continue contributing here.
I've been editing Wikipedia for a few months now, but I’ve only recently started contributing in English. I've also just posted a small request for help in the Teahouse regarding an article I'm working on.
By the way, since I already asked in the Teahouse, should I also place a Help me request here, or is it better to wait for a response there first?
Looking forward to learning more and being part of the community!
Best regards, VelvetQuill (talk) 23:38, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do not ask at both Teahouse and Help, as that wastes time of the volunteers who participate. David notMD (talk) 16:23, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
sure, thank you. VelvetQuill (talk) 16:51, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You draft...

[edit]

...has many statements of fact that are not supported by references, so expect it to be declined. Also, Wikipedia style prefers paragraphs to bullet lists. David notMD (talk) 16:29, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @David notMD
Thank you for your feedback! Could you clarify what you mean by statements not being supported by references? The information I included has certainly been synthesized and reworked by me, but it is all sourced from the texts I cited. If there are specific points that need additional referencing, I’d be happy to address them.
Regarding the format, I understand that Wikipedia prefers paragraphs over bullet points, so I will adjust that accordingly.
Additionally, would you suggest shortening the draft to improve its chances of approval?
I appreciate your guidance!
Best regards, VelvetQuill (talk) 16:56, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

When I look at the below, I see four statements, only one of which has a reference. If this was a paragraph rather than bullets, I could assume that the reference applied to all of the content. David notMD (talk) 17:01, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'll make it into a paragraph, then. VelvetQuill (talk) 17:23, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I rewrote that part. maybe now it'll be better. : ) VelvetQuill (talk) 18:11, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Global manga is defined by several distinguishing features:

  • Production focus: The emphasis is on the creative and publishing process, rather than mere visual similarity to Japanese manga.
  • Absence of direct Japanese input: Global manga is created without direct contributions from Japanese artists, publishers, or companies.
  • Stylistic influence: It adopts the visual and narrative conventions of Japanese manga, including character design, panel layout, and storytelling techniques.
  • Adaptation and hybridity: While influenced by Japanese manga, global manga often incorporates local cultural elements, resulting in unique hybrid styles and narratives.[1]

All the other section with bulleted statements, where each bullet is not referenced, is the same problem. David notMD (talk) 23:59, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure which one you're referring to. Should I avoid bullet points altogether? VelvetQuill (talk) 00:36, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, you have a much bigger problem: Manga outside Japan. David notMD (talk) 04:17, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @David notMD.
"Manga outside Japan" primarily discusses the international distribution and reception of Japanese manga, while Global Manga refers to works created outside Japan that independently adopt manga storytelling and aesthetics.
These are two distinct phenomena: one focuses on how Japanese manga spreads abroad, while the other represents a growing creative movement with its own industry, production methods, and artistic evolution.
Global Manga should have its own page for several reasons.
It is a unique and expanding phenomenon. It is not simply manga published outside Japan (and it is clear that having only one article creates confusion); it is created independently by artists worldwide, some of whom have trained in Japan but work outside its industry. Increasingly, these works have no direct ties to Japan, making them a standalone movement rather than an extension of exported manga.
While Manga outside Japan briefly mentions Global Manga, it does not fully explore its production, industry impact, or ongoing debates about its legitimacy (that could be discussed once a proper article for Global manga will be been established). At the moment, it offers only limited and scattered coverage of the topic. A dedicated entry would allow a structured discussion of these subjects and help avoid confusion between the two.
The term Global Manga is quite established as a term in academic studies and publishing. As new creators and publishers enter this space, the topic will only continue to evolve, making it important to establish a dedicated page that can be expanded over time.
Global Manga is a hot topic of debate, with some viewing it as an extension of manga and others questioning its value. A separate article would allow for a nuanced exploration of these discussions, rather than a passing mention in a broader article about Japanese manga abroad.
The Manga outside Japan article could briefly reference Global Manga with a link to its dedicated entry, ensuring a clear distinction between the international reception of Japanese manga and the independent creative movement developing worldwide. Likewise, the Global Manga article could acknowledge Manga outside Japan, emphasizing how they are two different things.
In summary, establishing a separate Global Manga page would provide clarity on its definition and industry impact, allow for a more in-depth discussion of its artistic and commercial significance, and support ongoing expansion as new creators and works emerge.
Given its rapid growth, Global Manga is no longer just a niche topic. VelvetQuill (talk) 11:18, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I know nothing about manga, and am not a Reviewer, so my advice is more general - paragraphs instead of bulleted lists. Good luck. David notMD (talk) 12:19, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you,
I'll do as you suggested. VelvetQuill (talk) 12:45, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Wikipedia allows copying or paraphrasing content and using references from other Wikipedia articles as long as you state in the Edit summary where it was taken from, so refs in that and other manga-related articles may make your draft stronger. David notMD (talk) 15:05, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, @David notMD. TIt's really kind of you to share these suggestions—I actually didn’t know about this. I’ll look into how to do it properly. It seems like a great idea to improve my article. VelvetQuill (talk) 17:33, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I've left a comment on your Articles for Creation submission, which can be viewed at Draft:Global manga. Thanks! Robert McClenon (talk) 22:17, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There is currently a disambiguation page Global manga (disambiguation) which mentions manfra as one of the styles of global manga. That is not mentioned, at least not by name, in this draft. Should it be included? Robert McClenon (talk) 22:19, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Robert McClenon
Thank you for your advice. I have added a mention to manfra.
Let me know if there is anything else that needs to be done before publishing the article.
