AV Navbox

[edit]

Hi again. I just created the Antivirus navbox but after I added the list of desktop/mobile products into it, it looks like a mess. Any way to clean it up or is it fine as it is? Also note that multiple links link to the same article. Many products don't have an article so its actually linking to the company page. Like CYSEC or F-Secure or Panda Security. Is this fine? Basically the term can refer to the company and/or the product. So it makes sense to add it into both sections. Comments/feedback is appreciated.

It might also make sense to merge desktop/mobile products into one list, removing the duplicates. Note that between desktop/mobile 90% are dups (link to the same underlying article), although the product names may differ.

Wonderfl (reply) 11:07, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey again @Wonderfl: Looks really good to me, nice job! I don't have any critiques to make. I'm not sure how lenient we should be for products that don't have their own article, but I'm fine with it as is. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 14:46, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your comments. Just want to say you have a really positive attitude, probably the most cheerful dude I've come across on this grumpy ol' 'pedia. Good day and keep up the cheer!! Kudos. -- Wonderfl (reply) 15:31, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know a tool/script that can add a navbox to the end of an article? Currently I've listed all these AV companies/products but I'll have to go add the navbox on each one. Not done that yet. Any automation? Wonderfl (reply) 15:33, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Wonderfl: Haha, thank you - I'm glad to hear that!
Good question...unfortunately I don't have an answer. I'm trying to think of how you could do it with AutoWikiBrowser (a semi-automated editing tools that makes tasks like adding categories or appending/prepending/replacing text easy), but I think there's too much variance from article to article to make it work well (if at all). ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 15:44, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for trying!! I wonder where you get all the energy from! Anyway keep up the good work. Regards and kudos. Wonderfl (reply) 15:04, 24 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WP:Co-op: Presentation at Wikimania 2015

[edit]

Hey SuperHamster/Archive. I've put in a submission for a presentation at Wikimania 2015 called Is Two the Magic Number?: The Co-op and New Editor Engagement through Mentorship. I'll be talking about the state of finding help spaces on en.wiki and how our new mentorship space, The Co-op, factors into that picture. Reviewing will begin soon and I'll need your help to be able to present our work. Please review our proposal and give us feedback. If you would be interested in seeing this presentation, whether you are attending or not, please add your name to the signup at the bottom of the proposal (you do not need to attend Wikimania to express interest in presentations). I, JethroBT drop me a line on behalf of Wikipedia:Co-op.

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of several of Godot13's quality submissions during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Co-op: Mentor profiles and final pilot prep

[edit]

Hey mentors, two announcements:

  1. You can now make your profile at The Co-op! Please set up your mentor profile here as soon as you are able, as the pilot begins on March 4th. It isn't very involved and should only take a minute. If you need more info about what the different skills mean (e.g. writing, communication), please refer to these descriptions.
  2. Profile creation, invitations, and automated matching of editors, profile creation, that will be coordinated through HostBot and a few gadgets may not be ready for our pilot, and will have to be done manually until they are ready. In preparation for the pilot, please read over these instructions on how we will be manually performing these tasks until the automated components are ready. I, JethroBT drop me a line on behalf of Wikipedia:Co-op.

The Wikimedia Foundation gave the Signpost an advance copy of the results of a survey of English Wikipedia readers regarding Wikimedia fundraising, due for official release today.
The community has arranged a number of commemorative initiatives focused on the gender gap, under the banner "WikiWomen's History Month".
ThinkProgress tech reporter Lauren C. Williams wrote a long article on how the Gamergate controversy has spilled over onto Wikipedia.
In an effort to protect and maintain the privacy of Wikipedia's thousands of editors, the Wikimedia Foundation has filed a lawsuit against the United States' National Security Agency, Department of Justice, and the Attorney General.
A dull week, with only three new entries in the top 10; a UFC champion, a Google Doodle and a Hindu festival involving people throwing powder at each other (though that does sound fun).
Six featured articles, three featured lists, and forty featured pictures were promoted this week.
I continue to be excited about the Core Contest because I see it as a way of encouraging the expansion of broad articles that are typically neglected by our article improvement incentives.

A bit of help

[edit]

I tried to resubmit a book description that got rejected by you yesterday but cannot figure out if in fact it has been resubmitted. Is there any way you can let me know that my changes did in fact get resubmitted? Thank you for any help you could give me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.76.13.250 (talk) 18:12, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there - the draft was indeed successfully re-submitted. It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks for a draft to be reviewed - however, I've gone ahead and re-reviewed it myself just now. Also, it appears you've been signed out of your account: remember to re-login :) Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:49, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We announce with sadness and gratitude that Signpost publication and newsroom manager Pine will be stepping back to focus on other Wikipedia and Wikimedia-related endeavors.
This process is now entering its long-awaited final phase with the upcoming SUL finalization, scheduled for April 15, less than a month away. ... Wikimedia Foundation chief talent and culture officer Gayle Karen Young announced her retirement from the Foundation this week. Young will be replaced in that role by interim chief operating officer Terry Gilbey. According to the Foundation's job description for the title as it was applied in the past, Gilbey will be in charge of "overall administration and business operations of the Wikimedia Foundation."
On March 13, Kelly Weill of Capital New York revealed that numerous Wikipedia edits originated from 1 Police Plaza, the headquarters of the NYPD. Most of the attention has focused on a number of their edits to articles about incidents of alleged police brutality and controversial police practices.
The publication of the Wikimedia survey findings on fundraising questions came three months after significant concerns were voiced about the design and wording of the December 2014 fundraising banners and e-mails.
Four featured articles, four featured lists, and thirty-five featured pictures were promoted this week.
If not for Kayne West's dubious repeat at #1, the 2015 Cricket World Cup (#2) would have made the top spot, albeit in a generally slow news week.

The Signpost – Volume 11, Issue 12 – 25 March 2015

[edit]
Last week the WMF announced the release of its long-awaited open-access policy.
Once when I was young, growing up in the 1990s, my father pulled his collection of railroad slides out from the basement, set up his projector, and shared a glimpse into American railway history with our family.
Four featured articles, three featured lists, and twenty-two featured pictures were promoted this week.
The Wikipedia Commons annual Picture of the Year contest has concluded, with 6,698 people voting, its largest participation yet.
This week's list is reminiscent of lists from the early days of this project: a preponderance of famous faces, Reddit threads, and Google Doodles.
The authors attempt to answer the question "Who are the most important people of all times?" Their findings clearly show that different Wikipedias give different prominence to different individuals.
A university gives a top Wikipedia editor free and full access to the university library's entire online content—and the Wikipedia editor, who is unpaid and not on campus, then creates and improves Wikipedia articles in a subject area of interest to the institution.

The Wikimedia Foundation this week released a State of the WMF report, a 38-page "snapshot" of where it is and where it wants to go in the future.
TruthRevolt targets another editor; edit stage right; the Nine Best Hoaxes to Have Hit Wikipedia
Six featured articles, first featured lists, and twenty-four featured pictures were promoted this week.
The Report is more of a mix of random topics than usual this week. The top spot is taken by Bhutanese passport, a Wikipedia article which contained a crazed spoken word version which drew widespread attention.
The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) will announce later today that it will begin accepting edits by mail for all of the projects under its scope, including Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Commons.
The Wikimedia Commons' annual Picture of the Year contest has concluded. The first 53 top-voted entries were disqualified because they were all nude.

I just wanted to commend you for being helpful at WP:TEAHOUSE. Unfortunately, I'm losing this account to the SUL Globalization, so I have retired it. You were one of the few bright spots I came across in the past few weeks, so I wanted to specifically mention it to you. Keep up the good work, it is appreciated. Pikachu (talk) 21:06, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Pikachu: Thanks so much, your message means a lot to me! I'm glad the Teahouse served its purpose in this case.
I noticed the retired message on your user page - I'm sorry to see you go, and I sincerely hope you reconsider in the future and come back to edit. I think the SUL global renaming is unfortunate for many users, and I definitely understand your position; I'd hate to be kicked out of my own account myself. When I run into cases of bad interactions, I remember that I'm here to edit for the greater project, and try to put any discouragement behind me, as hard as that may be. I hope I run into you again the future, either as some variation of Pikachu or under a brand new name. Cheers. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:25, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Username Policy

[edit]

While reading through the policy when selecting my username I noticed that the name could not be an exact company name. Although my username is in fact a portion of the company name, it is also an acronym for other personal nicknames I've had that I have used for many years. The letters by themselves do not advertise that I even have any business. Would it be possible to keep the initials I have chosen and just remove the reference to my company? Without the reference, I do not see how the acronym alone would be in violation.QKB (talk) 18:10, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@QKB: I see, thanks for the explanation! Your username should be fine, then. Referencing your association with your company on your userpage for the sake of declaring a potential conflict of interest can be fine, but it shouldn't be the main point of your userpage. I see you've changed it, and it looks all right now. If you have any questions about editing in the future, feel free to ask! The Teahouse is also a great place to get answers. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:17, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question and tx

[edit]

Thanks for help with the course assignment banner!

Question: What's the Wikipedia style preference/policy when paraphrasing a scholar who discusses another source. Example of student edit: "Olyan argues that the moral purity view of Klawans (2005) is wrong." Does Klawans need a full reference, or can we leave out a ref altogether? Thanks! ProfGray (talk) 00:49, 28 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@ProfGray: No problem! I think just citing Olyan's work is adequate, since that's all that's needed to verify Olyan's argument. I'm also assuming that Klawan's work would be discussed/cited before it. Otherwise, I think WP:CITEBUNDLE might also be a nice option - one footnote that lists multiple works. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 15:00, 28 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, the main take-away for me is that we cite the reliable source used (e.g. Olyan), and don't worry about how that source may refer to other scholars, because the scholars could be tracked down thru the reliable source itself. No, I wouldn't assume that the scholar is mentioned already, especially since that mention could be deleted at any time. Nonetheless, if the scholar is mentioned elsewhere in the article, then s/he could be cited directly or thru CITEBUNDLE, which is helpful. Thanks! ProfGray (talk) 14:55, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

David Coburn, a Member of the European Parliament for the Scotland region for the UK Independence Party, was blocked from editing Wikipedia on April 6.
Ten featured articles, nine featured lists, and twenty-eight featured pictures were promoted this week.
Though the continued predominance of movies, TV, and sports noted in last week's report largely continues, three additional topics joined the Top 10 this week.
Reader demand for some topics (e.g. LGBT topics or pages about countries) is poorly satisfied, whereas there is over-abundance of quality on topics of comparatively little interest, such as military history.

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! The election lasts just eight days, from Sunday 3 May until 23:59 UTC on Sunday 10 May, so at the time of publication, voters will need to act promptly.
Like colliding ocean liners, rousing entertainment and harsh reality merged ungainly in this week's top 10 list. The much heralded pay-per-view pummeling of Manny Pacquiao by Floyd Mayweather, Jr. dominated the list's top slots, giving this list one of its highest total view counts in months.

Greetings KEVIN ~ Nice meeting you! With Best Musical Wishes, ANDY Tuesday May 11th

My grandson Bryson is just turning YOUR age (19), finishing up his first year at UC Santa Barbara, having just produced his Blues Rock Band's 1st CD!

I'm very pleased to get your Guidelines on submitting colorful facts about my long singing career, to be accepted at Wikipedia.

Let me know what else is needed: More details like shows I've starred in? Or, as you noted, a less promotional tone?

Is music any part of YOUR career objective?

Hi I have added a piece of text to the wikipedia page called 'photo sharing', under the heading mobile photo sharing I added the following paragraph:

Critics of photo-sharing on social media such as Keen (2007) were concerned with the use of applications such as Instagram, because they thought the behaviours portrayed on these sites could potentially be linked to the narcissism trait. In his book, The Cult Of the Amateur, keen argues that “Self” is running digital culture, and he is of the opinion that people use social-media platforms because they are interested in advertising themselves. Buffardi and Campell (2008) also alleged that Instagram offers “a gateway for self-promotion via self-descriptions, vanity via photos, and a large amount of shallow relationships” However, Buffardi and Campell (2008) later said that the large number of users suggests the general psychology of the members is normative.

I am new to wikipedia and would like some feedback on this.

thank you

Three community-elected seats on the Board of Trustees—the ultimate governing authority of the Wikimedia Foundation—will be decided by Wikimedians in the election to be held 17–31 May.
This week has been a busy one for the Wikidata project, with nearly simultaneous Wikidata contests, both organized by Wikimedia Sweden, now underway.
Casual viewers may think I've posted the same list twice. But no, readers just happen to be really interested in May 2's Big Fight. In fact, last week was just the weigh-in and the trash talk. This week, the numbers actually increased.
Grant Shapps, who was the co-chairman of the UK's Conservative Party until this week, has been accused of maliciously editing the Wikipedia biographies of his party's rivals.
There is a public misconception of Wikipedia: that any anonymous editor can edit Wikipedia at any time, and cannot be tracked or identified.
Eight articles, one list, and five pictures were promoted to featured status on the English Wikipedia in a slow week.

Thank you for all your help!

For some reason I thought I had to add the Barnstar to your user page. I edited your page and then saw the barnstar, which looked odd at the end of the page so I deleted it. Thought I would post it here instead. The talk page makes more sense than the user page, but I am still new so your help is appreciated. Where do you want me to post the Barnstar? Thanks again Kingoptimizer (talk) 07:10, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Kingoptimizer: Talk page is exactly where barnstars go :) Everyone is in charge of their own userpage (including how they want to present their barnstars, if at all), so very rarely will you find yourself editing another user's userpage. That being said, that you very much for the barnstar, I appreciate it! Glad you're finding your way around. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 13:46, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikimedia Foundation's bi-annual Board of Trustees election is open for voting. Of the ten seats on the board, three are elected representatives of the global Wikimedia community—you.
The article counts of many Wikimedia wikis suddenly changed on 29 March 2015: as the Signpost reported at the time, sixty-five wikis fell below milestones tracked at the Wikimedia News Meta page, and three increased to new milestones.
The list is topped this week by Danish scientist Inge Lehmann, thanks to a Google Doodle celebrating her 127th birthday. Lehmann discovered in 1936 that the Earth has a solid inner core. It is sometimes surprising to realize how recently such basic scientific knowledge of the Earth, which we now take for granted, was discovered.
Wikipedia editors logging in on May 19 found themselves walking into an unexpected amount of anti-vandal work to keep the site in line with its extensive biographies of living persons policy. A plethora of Wikipedia articles related to the United States House Committee on Appropriations, and the fifty-one representatives serving on it, have been hit by a raft of anonymous editors making often vulgar edits referencing "chicken fucker," or more creative combinations: "sexual conduct", "sexual congress", "fornicator", "intimate relations", or "trysts with chickens."
Three articles, seven lists, and seven pictures were featured on the English Wikipedia.
Jimmy Wales and five others accepted the 2015 Dan David Prize at Tel Aviv University on May 17. The prize comes with US$1 million, ten percent of which goes to doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships.
This week, we had the pleasure of interviewing WikiProject Molecular and Cellular Biology, which has come a long way since our last interview in 2008. Like most projects, it has a long member list, but only a small subset of that group regularly contributes. With 28 featured articles and 58 top-importance start class ones, the project has clearly had some success, but has a ways to go. We talked to three regular project contributors.
The Arbitration Committee has an unusually large case load at present. Although perhaps not on a par with the high-profile, multi-party cases seen towards the end of last year and the beginning of this year, with five open cases the arbitrators are likely to be kept busy for the next several weeks.

I was wondering why Israelis built settlements so I turned to Wikipedia to the Israeli settlement article & looked at Contents. Nothing about why settlements were built. I didn’t feel like reading this long article, but I really wanted to find out why Israelis built settlements, so I started reading. Eventually I found one reason, security, but I had to read the entire article to be sure there were no other reasons given in the article. I had a feeling that there were other reasons for settlements, so I spent months doing research & discovered 7 more reasons. It would be great if the next person who turns to Wikipedia to find out why Israelis built settlements could go to the Israeli settlement article, to Contents & see “Why Israelis Built Settlements,” & jump to that section & not need to spend months doing research. Octopus1066 (talk) 20:25, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Octopus1066: Thanks for reaching out! The 'articles for creation' process is for submitting new articles, not additions to articles. You're free to edit articles yourself, or bring up proposals on article talk pages. In this case, you could look towards improving and expanding Israeli settlement. Note that such a topic is huge in regards to both amount of knowledge and amount of controversy, making it a "hot" topic to edit. Keep in mind WP:NPOV. Also note that, as an encyclopedia, we don't write things in a question-and-answer format. To get started, I might recommend brining up your addition on the article talk page and see if anyone has any thoughts on where to go with it, particularly in regards to the sources you use. You can also start thinking about how you might incorporate your work into an article (as I wouldn't recommend a straight up "Why did Israel build settlements?" section). ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 23:56, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ACC tool access request approved

[edit]

SuperHamster, thank you for your interest in the account creation process. I have verified that you are identified to the Wikimedia Foundation and approved your request.

You may now access the interface here pending a tool root marking your account as identified in the tool database. Before you begin handling requests, please ensure you have read and understood the account creation guide and username policy to familiarise yourself with the process.

Please subscribe yourself to the private ACC mailing list following the instructions on that page. I also advise that you also join us on IRC #wikipedia-en-accounts connect where a bot informs us when new account requests come in and you can get real time advice on how to handle requests.

Please note failure to correctly assess requests will result in suspension of tool access. Account creation is not a race, and each one should be handled diligently and thoroughly. Releasing personally identifying information (such as IP and email addresses), whether intentionally or unintentionally, is treated very seriously and will generally result in immediate suspension.

Currently you are allowed to create up to six accounts per day, and you won't be able to create an account with a similar name to that of another user; these requests are marked as "Flagged user needed" on the interface. However, if you reach the limit frequently, you can request the account creator permission at WP:PERM/ACC.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for participating in the account creation process. Again welcome!  John F. Lewis (talk) 19:04, 29 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Teamdopefreshnationforlife Keeps adding fake stuff to the American Ninja Warrior page.

[edit]

Hey, This person called Teamdopefreshnationforlife is really getting on my nerves. He keeps adding fake obstacles to the Stage 1 & Stage 2 Sections of the page, And his edits are fake because those obstacles have not been officially revealed because NBC won't be taping the ANW7 finals until late June 2015. (Proof: http://on-camera-audiences.com/shows/American_Ninja_Warrior) When I add obstacles to the page, I always give proof of it's existence. For example I claim that the Rolling Log is in the Orlando Qualifying Courses for season 7, I then give proof by adding the link to the picture or video that showcases that obstacle like this. (Proof: https://instagram.com/p/2ePtuokTTs/) (In this instance the Rolling Log is on the bottom right of the picture.) Just thought I'd tell you this, since I don't wanna be in another edit war.

Hi @JasonNolan64: Thanks for the heads up. I imagine this is the same editor that's been vandalizing American Ninja Warrior and other articles over the last few months with false information. I've left a final warning on their userpage; if they continue, I'll request admin intervention. As a word of caution, do be careful when reverting again and again on the same article - it takes two to edit war. There's the three-revert rule, which is a fairly strict rule that any editor should not revert on an article more than three times in a given 24-hour period. There are exceptions to this rule: for example, you can revert obvious vandalism as many times as necessary on an article. So when you're reverting, be sure to provide a clear edit summary stating why you're reverting. Repeatedly reverting without a clear explanation looks like a messy edit war. Anyway, thanks for bringing this up and your work on the article! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:28, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Williamsw21: No problem. I'm actually not sure about the whole table shenanigan, but the spelling fix was correct, and the other editor(s) provided no reasons for their reversions. For whatever reason, that page and a few other related pages have been an absolute mess in terms of edit warring and content changes, which is a pain to watch. Hey. I know you don't want me to add the ANW obstacles but I just got this message and it states, "(Damn Edit Wars/Bullies) Hi there Jason, Look I knew we have been on some bad terms, but there are bigger bullies out there that have picking on users like us. Like Seriously, the people who god rid of the ANW obstacles have OCD and just want to keep on getting rid of them. I suggest that people should know about sasukepedia, which is a better site for info for ANW. I'm sick of people undoing edits that deserve to be there and are correct. A Giant list of obstacles is useful to let people know what the obstacles are. I know how hard you worked on trying to protect and keep List of Obstacles on ANW. People who just keep editing the page, don't even watch the show at all. And I hope you read this to know, that I'm on your side. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:84:4100:FAFD:5DB1:D51E:9CE:4F6D (talk) 06:20, 16 June 2015 (UTC)" Can I please readd the ANW Obstacles to the page? I put a ton of work of putting that together. And if possible could I readd the obstacles in a way to be more organized? ~ JasonNolan64 (talk • contribs) 21:34, 16 June 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by JasonNolan64 (talkcontribs)

@JasonNolan64: Unfortunately, I'd recommend against doing so. While the IP seems to have the wrong idea (in no way are you being bullied), the IP is right that Susukepedia is better for this sort of thing. I get where you're coming from. One of the first edits I ever made was reverted for being to excessive in detail. I didn't get it at the time, though now I have a better understanding.
Wikipedia is a general encyclopedia that aims to provide an overview on its subjects. Nit-picky details like a list of obstacles are far too detailed and out of the scope of a general encyclopedia. That's something you'd find on a fansite, which Wikipedia is not. Sasukepedia, on the other hand, is. Think of the average reader coming to Wikipedia to learn about American Ninja Warrior; a gigantic list of obstacles would mean nothing to them.
And so yes, Sasukepedia or another fansite would probably be better suited. For example, on top of Wikipedia, I also edit several Nintendo wikis that go in-depth on all there is to know about Nintendo. Not everything that appears in those wikis would be appropriate for Wikipedia; in fact, very little would be. But that's okay, because Wikipedia serves a slightly different purpose than those wikis, and so I edit both.
The reason behind this is outlined in our guidelines and policies. For example, see WP:INDISCRIMINATE for why Wikipedia as a whole aims to avoid indiscriminate lists. WP:GAMECRUFT, while it applies to video game articles, provides an overview of why excessive gameplay details should be avoided in video game articles (and similarly, game show articles). I more than welcome you (and hope) that you continue to edit the topics you're interested in here on Wikipedia, but keep the more detailed stuff (like the list of obstacles) elsewhere. Hope this helps! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:46, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Afterplayoffice: In that case, there are a few other issues I'd like to point out:
  • Do you have permission to release his autobiography under Wikipedia's free licenses? (CC-BY-SA 3.0 / GFDL)
  • Even if you have permission, the text is entirely promotional and wouldn't be very useful. Wikipedia strongly discourages posting autobiographies on Wikipedia, as they are often promotional and not properly representative of the subject. If you're associated with Garland, I recommend reading our conflict of interest policy.
I'd recommend taking a look at Wikipedia:Your first article for an idea of how to start up a new article. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 21:04, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Dwclement: I'd be happy to help. I've made some quick formatting and wording changes, which you can view here. I'm about to hit the road, but I'll take a look at it again later tonight and provide some more in-depth advice. For now, quick question: Is the list of four key principles listed verbatim (or even paraphrased) from its source? If so, we may have a copyright problem with that. Even if not, however, I think it's best to avoid lists when possible, and instead try to incorporate that content into paragraph form. Again, I'll be back later tonight with more advice :) ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 21:38, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for your reply. Yes the 4 points are verbatim, Jing has submitted that part of the definition through me. These are her words and part of her request when I submitted this entry. Is there a private chat mechanism for copyright discussion? Dwclement (talk) 21:48, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Dwclement: We'll definitely have to sort that out, then. I've removed the content for now. IOIO

[edit]

IOIO. Totally new article. How does it look? Is the "technical details" part too detailed? I hope someone doesn't come along and delete the section citing some obscure WP policy. Please reply on my talk page or alert me using Ping.

Wonderfl (reply) 08:27, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Wonderfl: Sorry for the late reply, been busy the past few days! Article looks pretty good, nice job. Only question I have: are the images you uploaded of the board your own work? I see that they're available elsewhere online on the official site, Amazon listings, etc. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 14:41, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The photo on the infobox is from SparkFun, CC licensed. The graphics are my own, drawn on the date I uploaded them. You should not find the same versions them anywhere. I copied these graphics. Wonderfl (reply) 07:26, 26 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Wonderfl: A few issues.
  • If the infobox photo (File:IOIO OTG 1 Large.jpg) is from SparkFun, then you need to provide the proper attribution. Right now, the image's information template says the source is your own work, and that you are the author. The source should instead be the SparkFun website page that has the image, and the author should be the creator of the image (which would most likely also be SparkFun).
  • I notice that the image's license is CC BY-NC-SA 3.0; however, you uploaded the image under the CC BY-SA license. The former doesn't allow for commercial use, while the latter does. When it comes to free images, we only consider licenses that allow for commercial use to be free, so we can't use that image.
  • For File:IOIO V1 Pins.png and File:IOIO OTG Pins.png, it looks like you used official SparkFun images, and added the text yourself? Adding text to a pre-existing image makes your work a derivative of the original work, meaning that you wouldn't have the copyright to license it as you wish.
Let me know if what I've said appears correct to you - if so, we'll likely have to mark the images for deletion :( ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:38, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I guess we'll have to revert to the image I took, since SparkFun images cannot be used. And the graphics I created atop images provided by the author. Wonderfl (reply) 11:20, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks Wonderfl. I see you've requested permission from SparkFun to license the images correctly, so thanks for that too :) In the meantime, I've marked the images on the Commons as having no permission. If SparkFun gets back w/ permission within seven days, we can remove the deletion templates. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 13:27, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think you misunderstood. As I said before, the graphics were created as overlays on photos provided by the author. So please revert the copyright notice on File:IOIO V1 Pins.png and File:IOIO OTG Pins.png. Those are entirely my work + images by the author. Wonderfl (reply) 04:59, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Wonderfl: To clarify - you took SparkFun's images and added the text and lines, correct? The author still holds copyright on their photos, and you would need permission to release your edited version under your chosen license. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 05:02, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'll request licenses for those from SF. I'll have to contact the author again. Wonderfl (reply) 11:09, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Wonderfl: Great, thank you! Just to clarify how derivatives work for the future: If I upload a piece of art or other creative work, I have the copyright to it. That means that I have the right to control how my work is distributed and used, for the most part. This also means that someone can't take my artwork, modify it, and then distribute that work however they wish. Even though they added their own part to it, I still created a major part of that work. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 13:17, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks in advance for your assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.37.58.116 (talk) 17:44, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Just a note that you're logged out, so remember to log back in before editing. I'm not too familiar with Wikipedia books, but it looks like the error you describe is a known bug. It doesn't look like there's one single fix unfortunately, but it has been noticed and will hopefully be fixed eventually...though the bug has existed for several months already.
It might be strenuous, but you may end up having to remove articles one-by-one until you find which article is the one causing the error. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 13:56, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Last Door

[edit]

The Last Door. I didn't change much. But I added all the quotes. Too many quotes?

Wonderfl (reply) 11:24, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Wonderfl: Yea, I'd say so! It's usually best to integrate quotations within paragraphs, and to give context for each quotation. Ideally you'd give a mix of summarizing, paraphrasing and quotations, and I wouldn't expect more than one or two block quotes per article. The rule I like to go by is that each section should not just be a list of quotations; it should have its own text, which is supported by quotes. Check out Super_Mario_Galaxy_2#Reception_and_legacy for an example of how a review section should be laid out: a summary of each review, with short quotations here and there that support what's stated about each review. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 13:53, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Is it better now? Quotes only in Gameplay and Reception. Wonderfl (reply) 14:04, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Wonderfl: Getting better! Still, though, I would avoid listing long block quotes back-to-back in the Gameplay and Review sections. Integrate the quotations in paragraphs, and aim for one or two block quotes max. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 14:10, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the tips! I'll checkup tomorrow and do what I can. Regards. Wonderfl (reply) 19:35, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! :) ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:35, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I could use some help with the rationale of File:The-Last-Door-Header.jpg. Its released by the authors with CC-BY-4.0 and so I tried to find a suitable tag. I'm sure I messed up the rationale though. What rationale is needed for CC images? -- Wonderfl (reply) 19:41, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Wonderfl: Rationale is used to describe how we're using a copyrighted image under our fair use standards. If an image is freely licensed (by our standards), there's no need for rational since we're free to use it. You should replace the non-free data and rationale templates with Template:Information, and fill it in like you would other free images (a summary, author, source, etc.). Note that the source of the image needs to show that the image is freely licensed as you describe. If permission was emailed to OTRS for the image, let me know and I can help with that. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:45, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

XenMobile orphan tag

[edit]

Hi! Thanks again for accepting my draft for XenMobile last week. I was hoping you might have a few moments to help me address the orphan tag on the article. I found two places to link to the entry.

The first is the main Citrix Systems article. XenMobile can be linked in either:

The second is in the HP Networking entry, which mentions XenMobile in the third paragraph of the Mobility/BYOD/WLAN section.

While I realize these are pretty minor, uncontroversial edits, I'm a stickler about not making any edits myself because of my COI. Would you be able to create these links? Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 17:58, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Aryan hindustan: I've removed the picture for now. A new section of an article should have some text to it, too, not just an image. That being said, you can add an image in the future with the following syntax: [[File:FILENAME|thumb|CAPTION]]. Just replace "FILENAME" with the name of the file, and "CAPTION" with the image caption.

Do you mind if I ask -- before you tagged the image, did you read the articles where it was used? Geo Swan (talk) 16:04, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Geo Swan: Sorry for the late response, been busy these last few days. I've never actually seen the caption template before, and am surprised it isn't documented at WP:CSD. I figure it's not required, but thanks for tagging them! I'll also do so in the future.
I did read the articles. I suppose that, yes, that exact scene could not be easily duplicated. It looks like the disagreements comes in with our takeaway of WP:NFCCP, and the fact that I don't see how the image is necessary to help our readers' understanding of the subject. Is the image valuable? I'd say so, and it certainly fits some of the themes you take from the article. I don't see how the image needed, however, as readers can entirely grasp the relationship between the Rypiens through text. The primary purpose of biographical portraits is for identification, and for that, there's still the possibility that it can be done with a free alternative.
That beings said, just a note that it looks like the image was deleted earlier by an admin. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:51, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

[edit]

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Scotland Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Philadelphia Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4. Somerset Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5. Washington, D.C. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6. Somerset Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7. United States Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8. England Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!
