Question from Christopherdabrowski (13:47, 16 March 2025)

Hi Rambley, I hope you're well. I wanted to post an article about my great grandfather who was a famous professor of music in Poland. I've tried to stick to the guidelines and drafted a really factual and sourced article. Three questions: 1. How do I actually publish it? 2. I wanted to accompany it by a photo but the webpage keeps telling me that it doesn't look appropriate. The might be because it is a photo of an old album photo. Then 3, I want to link his bio to a page about a piano competition he was a juror on as there is currently a different (and incorrect) Marian Dabrowski referenced there. Anyway, your help would be gratefully appreciated. --Christopherdabrowski (talk) 13:47, 16 March 2025 (UTC)

Hi there! Hopefully these notes will help you out:
  • Since you've noted this is your grandfather you're writing about, this means you have a conflict of interest. While COI editing is not banned outright, it is mostly frowned upon. COI editing needs to be declared, ideally on your userpage or on the article's talk page.
  • To create a draft article, head to the article wizard. The wizard will give you some additional tips on declaring a COI.
  • It is ideal you submit your draft through the AfC process in order to get an impartial second opinion on it. Articles also need to be backed up by multiple reliable secondary sources that cover a topic in significant depth to be published; assuming this is the one in your userpage, it does not seem to fit this criteria. You may want to try and find more reliable sources about your grandfather; if you cannot find any, he may not be deserving of a Wikipedia article.
  • Images in articles must either be public domain (either through permission or copyright expiration) or have an adequate non-free usage description; more information about this is at Wikipedia:File upload wizard.
  • If I understand your third question correctly, information about linking to external sources can be found here.
Feel free to reply with any other questions or concerns you have. Rambley (talk) 18:03, 16 March 2025 (UTC)

Question from Objectiveanalysis (13:34, 24 March 2025)

Hello! I wanted to get some guidance on how to approach a situation where the edits are being repeatedly reverted without any reason. I am attempting to add peer-reviewed secondary sources to an article (that is in compliance with WP:MEDRS) and have started the discussion on the talk page as well, but a user is reverting it and not responding directly regarding why was it reverted. --Objectiveanalysis (talk) 13:34, 24 March 2025 (UTC)

Could you point me to the article in question? Rambley (talk) 13:40, 24 March 2025 (UTC)

Question from IkeTheKing7 (21:04, 24 March 2025)

Hey, so, I haven't done any editing yet and haven't done this before either but I wanted to add a Wikipedia page about games that can simulate Turing machines or are otherwise named "Turing Complete" meaning that they do the same as a Turing machine, or could do so with no regard to time, space, or computer restrictions such as memory or computing power. There are quite a few of them such as Minecraft, Terraria, Conway's Game of Life, and many others. All the game really needs is some sort of wiring or a way to simulate the wiring, and an output such as a screen or light. This can be done with conveyors as would be seen in Hydroneer or Satisfactory or with similar items such as "gliders" in Conway's Game of Life. So in all, I was wondering if you had any tips on how to get started with that. --IkeTheKing7 (talk) 21:04, 24 March 2025 (UTC)

Hi there, and welcome to Wikipedia. The first and most important thing to know is that articles are built off of multiple reliable secondary sources that cover a topic in significant depth. If a topic has no reliable sources, it should not be included. Secondly, original research on Wikipedia is prohibited. As mentioned before, articles are built off of reading sources and writing in your own words; original thought should not be included.
From what you've said, it sounds like you're wanting to write an article based on your own original research. Please do not do this. If multiple reliable sources cover "turing complete" games and specifically discuss the topic however, please see Help:Your first article to get some more information on article creation. Question from Anujmehtadh (04:32, 25 March 2025)

I would like to add a company page. There are many similar businesses that have already done this. So kindly guide how can I add a company page --Anujmehtadh (talk) 04:32, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

When writing about companies, especially ones you work for, please make sure to maintain a neutral tone throughout. Puffery pieces and articles that are solely for promotion often get speedy deleted. See WP:NOTPROMO.
See Help:Your first article for tips on how to get started. If you work for this company, you will also need to declare a conflict of interest; see WP:DISCLOSE for tips on how to do this. Rambley (talk) 09:34, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

Question from Frank Roger Mann (21:05, 26 March 2025)

Hi Rambley I'm an ancient ex-teacher of language and communication (which doesn't appear on Wiki's list of interests). All the problems of old age, but an avid reader of interesting or challenging interests. I'm also a good reader, writer, and editor. In short, I'll probably be inoperative in the near future, but am open to discussion, problem solving or just "stuff"-- until the inevitable happens! --Frank Roger Mann (talk) 21:05, 26 March 2025 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia! As Wikipedia has no deadlines, feel free to edit at your own pace. I hope you'll be able to find a topic area that interests you in due time, and I am here to answer any questions you have about editing. Rambley (talk) 21:08, 26 March 2025 (UTC)

Question from Private User15555 (23:55, 26 March 2025)

why do all my good edits get reverted --Private User15555 (talk) 23:55, 26 March 2025 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. I took a look at your contribution history and I can see how many of your edits would appear to be disruptive, even if in good faith. Adding small snippets of text with no source (e.g. here), citing Wikipedia itself or adding large spaces into articles are not the most constructive form of editing and will often get undone; which most of the edits have. Even if you do not intend to be disruptive, it can come across that way.
If I were you, I would check out Help:Introduction and read through its contents. I would also start out making small copyedits (fixing grammar and typos, etc) and even watching how other editors edit in order to get a good idea of what constructive edits look like. By that time, you'd be ready to start adding content into articles. Rambley (talk) 10:00, 27 March 2025 (UTC)

Question from Tim Vernon1 (15:19, 1 April 2025)

Hi, I have just joined Wiki and am a photographer. How do I add photos when editing pages?

Thanks,

Tim --Tim Vernon1 (talk) 15:19, 1 April 2025 (UTC)

Hi Tim! Welcome to Wikipedia.
Assuming you want to upload your own images, I would suggest checking out Wikimedia Commons which allows you to upload images to the public domain, which can then be used in articles. Other users have also uploaded tons of images which can be used. If you find one you like or want to add your own image, you can add it like this:
[[File:File Name.png|thumb|Image caption will go here.]]
This is just how I do it, and there are plenty of other image settings. I'd suggest you check out Wikipedia:Uploading images for more guidelines on uploading, and Help:Pictures for actually adding images into articles. Thank you! Rambley (talk) 15:35, 1 April 2025 (UTC)

What's defined as good sources. There's been this guy Onel who's being an absolute opp by trying to delete my pages for not having good citations --SmartDio97 (talk) 13:45, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Notability. I checked out what Onel was trying to delete, and I would agree; over-use of self-published sources does not establish notability for an article topic. Rambley (talk) 18:14, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

Question from Adreannahamby95 (23:43, 6 April 2025)

Hey I want to create an Wikipedia article about myself I'm a published author with a great deal of Internet traction --Adreannahamby95 (talk) 23:43, 6 April 2025 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Autobiography; TL:DR though, it's strongly discouraged. If you are truly notable, someone else will write an article about you.
WP:YOURSELF provides some perfect advice about this;
If you really think that you can meet the inclusion criteria, and if you are willing to accept that your article must be neutral and non-promotional, then propose one at Articles for Creation instead of creating one directly. Articles for Creation provides independent viewpoints that may uncover or discover biases you were unaware of, and shows you value volunteer editors' time over your own ego. Bold vs. heading for personnel

Hello! I don't believe I've had the pleasure of working with you, but I have to say that this edit summary is one of the best first impressions I've ever gotten of a fellow editor. I appreciate you explaining your rationale when challenged while also making it clear that you aren't wanting to edit war (and your sense of humour about it is delightful as well!).

I apologize for not pointing to the actual guideline I was referencing, as just broadly saying "for accessibility" isn't terribly helpful for future reference. I've used sub-headings rather than bold based on MOS:PSEUDOHEAD, which specifically recommends that we "avoid using bold text for headings" as "[s]creen readers and other assistive technologies rely on proper heading markup for navigation". Bold pseudo-headings are only meant to go under a sub-section (the "Black Country, New Road" H3 in this case), and even then "only as a last resort".

I don't want that quoting to come off as anything other than informative, as it's clear you're coming from a good place and (understandably) wanting to maintain consistency! Given that I also don't want to edit war or try to stifle disagreement, I won't revert your edit again. If you agree with my rationale though, I'd appreciate you either giving me permission to undo your change here, or undo the change yourself pointing to this discussion. And of course if you disagree, I'm happy to have my mind changed.

Thanks again for your demeanour, and I look forward to running into you on other articles in the future! Sock (tock talk) 16:35, 5 April 2025 (UTC)

(and as a small addendum, this massive edit you did is outstanding) Sock (tock talk) 16:38, 5 April 2025 (UTC)
Hi there! First of all, thank you for the kind message. I am glad you appreciated my little edit summary gag
Secondly, my edit attempted to be in accordance with MOS:VAR which expresses that existing styles should be in accordance with other articles similar. All of the BCNR album articles utilise bold for personnel headers. From my own personal experience reading through other articles (e.g. The King of Limbs, OK Computer and Selected Ambient Works Volume II, I have never really seen the H3 style be used for personnel.
Despite this, I do not mind if you'd like to change it back to H3; there are more productive things to do than tussle over headers! If you'd like to go that route, though, I ask that you adjust the other BCNR articles to also use H3 for the sake of consistency.
Hopefully none of this comes across as nasty; and thank you for your work on Forever Howlong as well! Rambley (talk) 16:45, 5 April 2025 (UTC)
Not at all! Like I said, your reasoning made total sense to me. I'm making some updates to Forever Howlong now that I have my hands on the physical copy, so I'll adjust those headings and do the same for their other albums.
In your defense as well, I've used the bold sub-headings for quite some time as well. My diligence about using H3s instead comes from my work, where I've been learning a whole lot more about accessibility (and inaccessibility) online, and it's a little thing that I think goes a long way. Thanks again! Sock (tock talk) 14:59, 8 April 2025 (UTC)

Question from American-keys (05:19, 11 April 2025)

Hello there, Why my article was declined? I don't really understand. I just wrote information about the Brand. --American-keys (talk) 05:19, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

Hi there! I took a look at the draft in question (the one in your sandbox) and I can see the problem. Your draft is not supported by reliable sources. All articles on Wikipedia must be supported by reliable sources to verify claims made. Your draft does not cite any sources, and thus was declined. Some of the draft also reads as slightly promotional; articles need to maintain a neutral tone at all times to be included. Rambley (talk) 08:18, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

Question from HumanR1ghts4a11 (06:40, 17 April 2025)

Hi, I started creating a sandbox yesterday and I previewed it, but didn't want to publish it yet - now I can't find it? could you please le the know how I pick up where I left off? --HumanR1ghts4a11 (talk) 06:40, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

If you did not hit "Publish Changes" before closing the tab, your work was unfortunately not saved it's good practice to publish all changes you make to your sandbox in future to make sure everything is saved, or copy it into a text document or something adjacent.
