Himanshu Gupta (born c. 1986) is an Indian American Energy policy expert, engineer and social-entrepreneur in renewable energy. He is the co-founder of Sustainable Growth Initiative (thinksgi.com), and has worked at the Office of Al Gore as the India Advisory fellow, Office of Nicholas Stern, Baron Stern of Brentford as a visiting associate, and the Government of India (NITI Aayog, previously Planning Commission) as Energy and Climate change project lead. In 2016, Himanshu was included in the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 list for helping corporates reduce their carbon footprint in India.

Early life and education

Himanshu hails from the holy city of Mathura in India. He did his schooling in India and completed his undergraduate education in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 2009. He was a resident in Azad Hall and was actively involved in Dramatics and Technology societies.

He is currently pursuing his MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business as a Reliance Dhirubhai Ambani Fellow, focusing on clean energy and sustainability initiatives.

Policy Work

Himanshu shaped India’s energy policy by writing its Renewable Energy Chapter in the National Five Year Plan 2012 – 2017 ( Five-Year Plans of India). He worked with United States Department of Energy, Government of the United Kingdom, Confederation of Indian Industry and several other organizations to implement the first Energy Sustainability Pathways project in India. He helped manage India’s National Clean Energy fund from 2011 to 2013.

He also worked with the Office of Al Gore and the Office of Lord Nicolas Stern on policy reforms to promote clean energy.

Social Entrepreneurship and volunteer work

In 2014, Himanshu co-founded Sustainable Growth Initiative, an NGO to help corporates and governments reduce their carbon footprint and increase energy security. He was awarded the Forbes 30 under 30 for his efforts to reduce carbon emissions in India. He is also involved as pro-bono consultant with several non-profit organizations.
