Gatoclass, I hope you're having a good New Year.

I was hoping you could return to this DYK review, since it has been waiting quite a long time for you. If not, have you any suggestions on how the review might proceed? Thank you very much. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:03, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's been another eleven days. If you aren't going to come back to this soon, we need to find someone else. A minute of your time to reply here if you won't be getting back to this nomination by the end of the month would be appreciated. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:33, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, for a variety of reasons I try to cut my participation to a minimum at this time of year, and just confine myself to routine work. I will try to wrap up this nomination in the coming week - apologies for the delay. Gatoclass (talk) 16:59, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all the great work since the above. I just noticed that EdChem forgot to ping you in his reply of February 7, so I'm posting this now to let you know that the ball is back in your court. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:03, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

[edit]

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
  • European Union Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
  • Japan 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! DYK back to one a day: one more adjustment

[edit]

Gatoclass, I've just swapped lead hooks in preps 2 and 5 so the March 21 request is still honored, but I was wondering if you could reset the time so the next set is promoted at 00:00 rather than 00:35. There's no reason not to, since the current set on the main page is still getting more than its original 12 hours; indeed, it will get over 23. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:38, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

 Done, thanks. Gatoclass (talk) 16:48, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Album primo-avrilesque

[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Album primo-avrilesque at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 12:58, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Gatoclass, why did you update the next prep from 4 to 6? Prep 4 is the next prep to be promoted—it's the first of the two April Fools' Day sets (that still haven't been built with 21 hours to go), and you need it up next.

Something has happened to prevent me from editing NextPrep—I've always been able to do so before—so I couldn't revert you. Please revert yourself. Thank you. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:48, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes BlueMoonset, I realized after rotating the prep that the empty preps were for the April Fools hooks, so I already reverted. However, we have another problem - it seems the bot has broken down again, the update is two hours late. I am planning on making a couple of adjustments to the next set in the queue before updating manually, unless you have a better idea. Gatoclass (talk) 02:54, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Materialscientist promoted the set manually BlueMoonset, so now that is out of the way. Now it's just a matter of finalizing the April Fools sets and getting them into the queue. I am going to ping Shubinator to ask if he can look at the bot in the meantime. Otherwise, the April Fools sets may have to be updated manually. Gatoclass (talk) 03:06, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Gatoclass, thanks. I did know: I asked MaterialScientist to do a manual update as soon as I realized that the bot hadn't done so and had posted a note to that effect on Shubinator's page. I hope Shubinator sees it tonight, or tomorrow before 00:00 UTC; otherwise, it will be manual updates, which are always hard to time. I'll post a note on Materialscientist's page asking him to stand by for tomorrow. I've also posted a note to WT:DYK asking for help with figuring out why NextPrep has been caught in cascading protection from the Main Page—of all pages, it's the one that shouldn't be linked to from there, since it doesn't feed or affect the main page in any way. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:25, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

April Fool's

[edit]

It's OK if you can't run it for April Fool's Day. At least I managed to get the Hells Canyon part cited, so at least something good came out of it. SL93 (talk) 06:35, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I saw you promoted this to Prep 4 so I closed the template for you. Of course, none of this followed the rules: I didn't sign off on my review, and you promoted your own nomination. ;) I'm wondering if you would consider substituting "French incoherent" for "French artist" in the hook; I think it would work better. Best, Yoninah (talk) 10:29, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Yoninah. Yes, we had to cut a corner or two to get these sets ready :)
As for the "incoherent", I'm afraid that I can't agree that would be an improvement. The whole point of April Fools day is to fool the reader, if you use "incoherent" rather than "artist" you are effectively telegraphing to the reader that this isn't a serious artist. What I like about the existing hook is that it reads like a straight, serious hook, so that you look at the thumbnail image and say to yourself, wait, is that a real picture of something and I just can't see the detail at this resolution, or is it just a block of colour? So you click on the image and realize that yes, it's just a block of colour and you've been made an April Fool :) Gatoclass (talk) 11:29, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I understand. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 12:43, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Changing DYK over to 12 hours for today

[edit]

Gatoclass, can you please reset User:DYKUpdateBot/Time Between Updates so it's 43200, so the bot grabs the next set at 12:00 UTC? Many thanks. (And if you could set it back after the April 2 00:00 set is moved to the main page, that'd be great, too.) BlueMoonset (talk) 05:35, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Gatoclass, I haven't seen you editing, so I decided to play it safe and ask Materialscientist to do the reset, which he has done. I'll assume you'll be able to set it back again after the first post-AFD main page promotion unless I hear otherwise. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:10, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Winker's Song

[edit]

I have found a few sources for the Ibiza claim as well as one for it being used in Brighton for the same purpose. Personally I think the Brighton source is a bit stronger than the Ibiza ones I've managed to scrape together. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 08:20, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for making the effort, The C of E, but with sources like that I think the hook will just end up getting pulled. Gatoclass (talk) 08:40, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's why I said the Brighton one is probably better than the Ibiza one. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 08:41, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Yeah, but that one isn't much good either, it doesn't actually say it was used to clear the dance floor, and it's only about one dance floor anyway. Gatoclass (talk) 08:52, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Or we don't have to specify the location, just say "the Wanker's Song is used to clear dancefloors"? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 08:49, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
  • Japan 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
  • Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Woman card

[edit]

Upon further searches for sources as you mentioned at Template:Did you know nominations/Woman card, I have found one that supports the speech and have entered it into the article for balance. Would you be able to restore the tick as a result please? The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 07:18, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The C of E, it's an improvement but I still think it overstates the criticism - the Gillard speech got international attention and was praised by political leaders around the world, while also getting some predictable sniping from a couple of conservative websites. I haven't forgotten this nomination, just haven't had time to get back to it yet, but I'm sure I will do so some time this coming week. Gatoclass (talk) 12:41, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

[edit]

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

The heat turns up on the 32 contestants who entered round three: 13 featured articles, 82 good articles, 167 DYKs, but we had to pick just eight of them to advance.

Hi, when you pulled the hook for POV concerns, I was surprised that you didn't add an NPOV tag to the article. I went ahead and did that, citing the DYK discussion, and now the page creator answered back on the article talk page. Would you like to add anything to that discussion? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 16:37, 18 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for adding the NPOV tag Yoninah. I did read the article creator's response yesterday and I think his changes are an improvement, though the article still needs a copyedit, but I didn't respond yet because I am considering my options with regard to this nomination. Even if the article meets notability, which I doubt, I have misgivings about the notion of running an article like this on DYK given that the "book" has been described as a racist prank. Should we really be giving free publicity to such a stunt? It seems to me not. Gatoclass (talk) 04:37, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I see I have misread your post. I don't have time to re-read the article again right now but I will make a response on the article talk page at a later time. Gatoclass (talk) 04:51, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, the AfD regarding the article ended as "no consensus" and I think that the POV problems have more or less been addressed. Could you please inform me what the current DYK status of the nomination is, as the reason for a pause is no longer correct? Thanks, DGtal (talk) 21:59, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DYK admin role RFC

[edit]

Gatoclass, I halted that previous RFC at your request: it's been more than a month, and you haven't yet gotten back to me about suggestions as to how you would like to formulate it. May I ask that you do so soon? The issue is still current: since that conversation, we have had over 50 updates to the main page, all handled by admins without clarity as to their role. Vanamonde (talk) 04:57, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Vanamonde93, I can assure you that I haven't forgotten about this issue at all and I fully intend to pursue it, but just at the moment I don't feel up to a discussion about processes for a variety of reasons. DYK is not going to fall apart in the meantime, this is a grey area that after all has existed for a long time so I don't think there's any great urgency about resolving it, and I would really appreciate it if you held off from pursuing this for the time being. Gatoclass (talk) 10:54, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Come, Gatoclass. I can understand not feeling up to a discussion; but you don't want me to pursue it in the meantime either? Can you at least give me an approximate timeline? Vanamonde (talk) 11:09, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I can't give you a timeline but I can assure you it will be in the not-too-distant future. Sorry I can't be any more specific. Gatoclass (talk) 11:46, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round. Meanwhile Yellow Evan, a typhoon specialist, was contributing 12 DYKs and 10 GAs, while Adityavagarwal and Freikorp topped the GAR list with 8 reviews each. As we enter the final round, we are down to eight contestants, and we would like to thank those of you who have been eliminated for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. The lowest score needed to reach round 5 was 305, and I think we can expect a highly competitive final round.

Invitation to Admin confidence survey

[edit]

Hello,

Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

WikiCup 2018

[edit]

So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? If you have a view on these or other matters, why not join in the WikiCup discussion about next year's contest? ArbCom 2017 election voter message

[edit]

Hello, Gatoclass. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

DYK for Wombat Divine

[edit]

On 25 December 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Wombat Divine, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the children's book Wombat Divine was written in response to the publisher's request for "a typically Australian Christmas story"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Wombat Divine. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Wombat Divine), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thank you re Ba humbugi

[edit]

Thanks for defending the hook for Ba humbugi. Clearly it was an interesting hook since it got nearly 6,000 clicks on Christmas! It's unfortunate how some people are so quick to judge it and to call it "meh", especially when many of Wikipedia's readers have different views. Umimmak (talk) 08:37, 26 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know where you got the "6000 hits" from Umimmak, because the page hits statistics aren't showing up for me yet. But if you are correct, yes that is a pretty good score for a quirky.
I originally moved it out of the quirky spot to try and correct set imbalance elsewhere, but after it went to the main page, decided it should go back to the quirky spot where Yoninah had originally put it. I thought it was pretty amusing - you can hardly go wrong with a critter called Bah humbugi, can you? - and it fitted very nicely with the Christmas theme. My only regret is that I think the reference to A Christmas Carol should have been in the article from the outset to help readers make the connection. I did eventually add a line to that effect, but only after the hook had been featured for some hours. Anyhow, thanks for the fun nomination. Cheers, Gatoclass (talk) 12:08, 26 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
