Question from PinnHJ (02:41, 6 February 2024)

I edited false statements in Taiwan History in Chinese WIKI many times because its editing groups in Taiwan use the propaganda of the domain political party instead of professinal researches. Then they locked my acount ! I am a researcher to study the history of Taiwan's tea economy, ceramic economy and now doing Taiwan architecture history. I have publiched my artichcle in an open-acess journal of the CPME last year. How can I remedy the unprofessional statements from the editing groups in Taiwan? --PinnHJ (talk) 02:41, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

PinnHJ I can't see the edits of the account you have used on other
Wikipedias, so can't trace what may have led to the situation you describe. (Even if I could, I doubt my HSK4 中文 would adequately grasp discussion nuance there.)
Nor do I know what inter-user appeal processes may exist on another Wiki.
I have occasionally seen mention of problems of factional capture on other Wikipedias, but I don't think I have seen remedies for this.
This may be the most awkward and frustrating situation. All I can suggest, from an English Wikipedia perspective, is that one sometimes has to sidestep intractable disputes and find other parts of the overall project which are more encouraging to edits. AllyD (talk) 09:43, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for your suggestion. I believe WIKI is a forum to deliver the true information rather than the false propaganda for some political cult. 111.249.231.98 (talk) 12:17, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Jordan Michow (10:53, 12 February 2024)

How to publish scientific research work on a historic theme? How to put some photos, drawings, and copies of documents? --Jordan Michow (talk) 10:53, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Jordan Michow, photos, drawing and copies of documents that are out of copyright can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Previously published research papers can be used as article references on Wikipedia; unfortunately, research that hasn't already been published elsewhere is more problematic here, because of Wikipedia's policy concerning original research. Question from Namady (07:58, 7 March 2024)

Hello AllyD, I was looking through the article on Dinghy racing and noticed that there was no mention of the importance of identifying flags from the Race Committee which are used to communicate with boats on the water. Anyone who races HAS to know what the flags displayed mean as there is no other way to communicate with them once they are afloat. There is a link to 'racing rules of sailing' towards the bottom of the article but I feel it's important enough to have a summary in the main headings. What do you think? --Namady (talk) 07:58, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Or perhaps a summary sentence and link slightly further into the article, for example at Dinghy_racing#Racecourse? Anyway, I would suggest that you propose the change that you have in mind by using Add topic in Talk:Dinghy racing, for input from others interested in the topic, so that you agree a consensus. Question from Kalevad (22:47, 6 March 2024)

Hi Ally, I am interested to create new content and not edit. How do I begin my article? --Kalevad (talk) 22:47, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

Kalevad, I would always suggest that editing existing article content is the best way for a new contributor to begin. It helps gain familiarity with how things are usually expressed: even simple matters such as paragraphing, date format, etc., but also - crucially - how articles are referenced, this being a requirement. But if you really want to create a new article, then the WP:AFC process will guide you. AllyD (talk) 08:36, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Indian times k (14:48, 26 March 2024)

hey man I am overwhelmed by the sheer amount of resources present here i do not know what to do and how to . Do you suggest any easier articles to edit? --Indian times k (talk) 14:48, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

Indian times k, I guess there could be two questions here: the how-to and the what-articles? For the how-to, Help:Getting started has useful resources. As to what articles to edit, one way is simply to start slowly and small, by fixing the inevitable typos that you notice while reading articles. Or by working with one page on a topic that you know about - but it is important to supply references for any new facts, etc. that you add to an article. AllyD (talk) 16:48, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello AllyD,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Question from ResearchTheorist (17:44, 21 April 2024)

Hey! You might not get this question a lot, but how does your account get "marked" for mentorship? When I created my main account 9 months ago, I didn't remember being assigned a mentor (unless I opted out of it). Is this a new thing? I've tried to do some digging around but haven't found anything. (note: Please ping HistoryTheorist as this account is only used on vacation or on public computers.) ❤ResearchTheorist❤ 17:44, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

ResearchTheorist, people's new account get "marked" with a volunteer mentor at random, through the Growth project's Newcomer homepage. I think it has been running for some time now: when I signed up around 6 months ago, I felt that I had volunteered quite late. I can't see whether that scheme was fully in place when HistoryTheorist started. AllyD (talk) 21:47, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
Oh, I was wondering how you became a mentor. However, I think you answered my question though. Thanks! ❤HistoryTheorist❤ 02:16, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the info! I might sign up after the academic year ends. ❤HistoryTheorist❤ 02:26, 22 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from Louis1119 (17:40, 6 May 2024)

hey, I want to take a wikipedia page live, how to go about it? Could you please help --Louis1119 (talk) 17:40, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Louis1119, I would not recommend creating a new article as your first activity on Wikipedia. It is better to learn by improving existing articles, but if you do want to start that way, the WP:ARTICLEWIZARD could help you. To avoid disappointment, though, it is definitely worth first reading WP:NOTABILITY, WP:REFERENCING and WP:COI before seeking to create a new article. AllyD (talk) 06:13, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello friend. Help me to fix my articles 😊❤️❤️ --98754DP (talk) 08:56, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

From what I can see, the sole article that you have created was deleted and there is a Conflict of Interest notice on your Talk page. It is worth reading the links in that message before drafting another article. AllyD (talk) 09:35, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from Swampfallgirl on Gary L. Littrell (16:16, 8 May 2024)

Hello

I’d like to add family to Gary Littrell’s page. How may I do that?

Thank you Suzanne --Swampfallgirl (talk) 16:16, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

You can add a section on a person's family to a biographical article, though personally I would want to ask myself if the family people are relevant to the subject's reason for notability. But most importantly, any such family detail would fall under the special WP:BLP conditions, and every fact must be supported by reliable 3rd party references. AllyD (talk) 17:39, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from Isracodes (14:19, 9 May 2024)

Dear AllyD,

I hope this message finds you well. I've been working diligently on drafting my first Wikipedia person biograph in the sandbox, and I believe it's now ready for publication on the live site. However, I'm unsure about the process and would greatly appreciate your guidance on how to proceed.

Could you please assist me in understanding the steps involved in moving my draft from the sandbox to the live Wikipedia platform? Any insights or instructions you can provide would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you very much for your ongoing support and mentorship. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Warm regards, Israel Biselu --Isracodes (talk) 14:19, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

You would have to move the article to Draft: <intended title> Then follow the WP:AFC instructions. However, as it stands I would be very surprised if it were to be accepted by a reviewer.
  • Your article is a biography with no in-line references.
  • It is unclear what is the basis for any claim to notability.
  • It is also unclear what is the licensing position for the photo uploaded to Commons: did you take this yourself?

What should help articles should I first read to get started? There's a lot. --Yama dope (talk) 02:42, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

Yama dope, it looks like you have got started well with your first few edits. It is probably good not to feel you have to do a lot of preparatory reading. Better, I think, to be conscious that these Help articles are available when needed, and just treat them as backup - for example, if you are adding a statement to an article, checking WP:REFBEGIN. Question from Kritikal tinkerer 101 (17:08, 22 May 2024)

Hello, I would like to add a citation to the article on the Village of Valatie. I'm a Valatian and noticed the claim about the 1st in the nation Santa Claus Club visiting every child in the village on Christmas Eve (Ages up to 10.) I know it sounds like a fairy tale, but it's real ....here is the validation link with the history of the club. Thank You. https://www.valatiesantaclausclub.com/ --Kritikal tinkerer 101 (talk) 17:08, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

@Kritikal tinkerer 101: The page at WP:REFBEGIN gives information on adding a reference. One thing I would say, though, is that it is better to cite an independent 3rd party source (for example, regional media coverage) rather than the primary source of the Santa Claus Club itself. Another, more complex, point based on looking at the Valatie, New York article as a whole, is that it has text about this Club in the History section, and then more about Christmas activities under Arts and culture, which may be a more appropriate place for all this information (suitably referenced). Can You Help Me Edit? --Oros timis cristian ioan (talk) 06:42, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

Oros timis cristian ioan, that article is protected against vandalism, so new editors cannot edit it directly. If you have identified a change that should be made, you can propose it on Talk:Henry Ford. Remember that everything needs to be referenced by a reliable source. It isn't clear whether this question relates to improving the linked article (in which case you need to identify references for any change) or a real-world query (for which Wikipedia is not an appropriate forum). AllyD (talk) 06:44, 1 July 2024 (UTC)

Question from Toshybaba (17:40, 2 July 2024)

Hello , I just want to know how am going to have profile on here --Toshybaba (talk) 17:40, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Wikipedia doesn't really deal in terms of profile pages. You can create a User:Toshybaba page, but its content is much more limited than would be the case on a Social Network site: the Help page here is worth reading; it says "you should avoid substantial content on your user page that is unrelated to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a general hosting service, so your user page is not a personal website. Your user page is about you as a Wikipedian". AllyD (talk) 19:16, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Better to focus on what you can edit, which is almost every article, Talk page, etc. Where there are restrictions, particularly against new editors, are articles about, for example, famous living people, which have often had to be protected against vandalism. AllyD (talk) 15:29, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

@Hamood Toru Then that has nothing to do with Wikipedia. You need to address that to Google or the search enging you're using. —C.Fred (talk) 18:51, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
@Hamood Toru It may be that the search engine utilised a Wikipedia version prior to your 26 July 2024 15:19 edit which introduced the ministerial appointment. But as is said above, that is a matter for the search engine, not Wikipedia. That aside, given your involvement could you please (a) disclose it on the article Talk page, and (b) use edit requests on that Talk page to propose future changes to the article, along with suitable references rather than make the changes directly? Question from KAcadianK.1785 (16:19, 5 August 2024)

Hello,

First, thank you for your help. I don't know ho to add info to Wikipedia. I just don't want to mess anything up.

Question: Why were the specific family for Francis I of France taken off his page or was it changed to the French monarchs list. (I m talking about the section and the bottom of Francis I's article. It has a specific section at the bottom of the page. --KAcadianK.1785 (talk) 16:19, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

@KAcadianK.1785: I'm not sure what you're referring to: the Francis I of France article seems to have detail about the subject's family in both the Early life and Accession and Marriage and issue sections? What I would say from a look at that article and its version history is that there is a lot of to-and-fro - and less use of the Edit Summary to explain changes than I would consider appropriate: an explanatory Edit Summary is always useful. If there is content which has been removed at some point, then I would suggest asking about that, either in a new section on the Talk:Francis_I_of_France page or on the User Talk page of the person who made the change. AllyD (talk) 16:42, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
I am talking about the Ancestors page. The first king Francis is descended from was his 2nd great grandfather- Charles V of France. His Father, Grandfather, Great-Father were not kings. They were descended from 2nd sons (or lower, or oldest surviving son). These people have a title. Louis l was Charles V lower numbered son. His older brother was King Charles VI of France. by the time you come to the new branch, Capetians- House of Valois, then Valois- Angouleme, Valois-Bourbon, this is centeries seperation of these people. You can create genealogy chart to see who are Francois I"s imediate ancestors. It is a genealogy 5/6 generation pedigree chart. Karin KAcadianK.1785 (talk) 17:05, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from Anon Shreyash (15:53, 22 August 2024)

Sir I have recently edited a page "https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_M30s&diff=prev&oldid=1241684396" I have just edited the wrong 56MP to 5MP. Simple The problem is it gave me negative points. And when I saw the edit again it showed nothing wrong in the Visual section but showed so many things in WikiTexts(the coded one) that I have done so many things. But nothing wrong in Visual section. As I have only removed "6" from "56"mp. Thats It. --Anon Shreyash (talk) 15:53, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

Anon_Shreyash, I am not sure what you are meaning by "negative points", maybe the (−236‎) byte count between this and the preceding version? If so, this is just due to you using the Visual Editor which has adjusted some of the formatting (mainly spaces) when it loaded and then saved your change? It looks ok. Question from The Football Jason (02:31, 30 August 2024)

Is it only once that u can write an article --The Football Jason (talk) 02:32, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from The Football Jason (02:32, 30 August 2024)

How to make another article pls --The Football Jason (talk) 02:32, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

@The Football Jason, I am not quite sure what your questions mean. Yes, there is only one article on each topic. But, looking at your edits, which are mostly adding to your User Talk page, I am wondering whether you are asking about having multiple User pages?
While that is possible, it would be best to look at what is reasonable use of Talk pages - broadly, to discuss improving the encyclopaedia. Speculation about possible transfers doesn't work here, the focus is on verified facts. There are people do useful updating work on that, even, for example, in my interest in Scottish lower league football. AllyD (talk) 09:09, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from Uhohbackagain (07:10, 8 September 2024)

Hi Ally! I am so excited to join this editing community. I consider writing and editing one of strengths, and even have a side business of essay and paper editing that I do in my free time for some extra income. I do, however, have a question for you. In the past I have made many edits, which I considered non-bias and factual, and even included legitimate sources but constantly had them being taken down and reversed. How can I avoid that in the future and make sure all my work is reflected in the long-run? Thank you. --Uhohbackagain (talk) 07:10, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

  • Uhohbackagain, you mentioned previous editing. If you still have access to the account you were using at that time, it would be worth adding a Retired note to that account's User Page, and maybe note the previous account on your User Talk page. Anyway, as to your actual question, without being able to see your past edits, I would just say that adding text along with a reference should not be a problem. If a difference of opinion does arise with another user reverting your changes, I would then suggest taking this to the article Talk page for others' input to achieve consensus. Question from Xinran Eady (14:03, 8 September 2024)

How can I update my new published books into Xinran?

Still Hot a collection of surprising, affecting, funny and emotional stories about forty-two women, including Xinran, who share their very personal stories of the menopause. It was published in 2020.

Barefoot Books Water is a collection of stories, published in 2021, told by a friendly water droplet, guiding children through topics ranging from melting and freezing to the ways in which water literally shapes the Earth. These stories are told by storytellers from around the world, including Xinran.

The Book of Secrets, Xinran’s ninth book, was published by Bloomsbury in February 2024. It tells the incredible story of a Chinese man through the secret letters he left to his wife and daughter, providing unique insight into the history of war, love, deceit, betrayal and political intrigue in China over the past century.

China Adorned was first conceived by Toby Eady in 2009. From 2009 to 2014, Xinran and Toby led a team in seeking out an author and a photographer with the necessary expertise and experience. In 2018, Chinese anthropologist Deng Qiyao became attached to the project and began writing the text, which was translated into English by Will Spence and Fan Wu. From 2019-2022, the book was brought together and designed by publishers Thames & Hudson in Australia/UK and Yilin Press in China, with Xinran serving as Executive Editor. The book, the first ever Chinese-English bilingual picture book on Chinese ethnic minorities, was published in 2022. --Xinran Eady (talk) 14:03, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

@Xinran Eady: the text you have proposed above (and subsequently added to the Xinran article) is unreferenced and much of it is promotional in tone rather than encyclopaedic. Better to stick to just the facts, without value judgment. Most importantly, though, please read WP:COI regarding editing topics in which one has an interest. AllyD (talk) 11:18, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for your message, I am Xinran, the author of the books, all of updated information have been published by the recognised publishers and the media. You could prove it on the internet and those publishers and media reviewers.
I always admire you update my information in time, but don’t know why it stopped and nothing updated after Covid.
Many thanks!

How do i edit an article? --Chupapimunanjo69 (talk) 17:55, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

Can I add a picture to this page. I have a picture of captain hunts grave stone --Hethatloathesthelieswearetold (talk) 14:38, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

Hethatloathesthelieswearetold my first reaction is that the article has quite a number of images, but then that only the portrait is personal, so the suggested photo could benefit the article. Starting editing with an image may not be for the faint-hearted! You would use the Commons uploader first, then once that is complete, place the image in the article. I'd suggest copying and adapting the code for the image at the top of the Life section until you get the placement and size that you want. AllyD (talk) 14:59, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from DavidRJD (02:47, 23 September 2024)

Hello! I am making proposed changes here -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Nexperia

Is this the correct way to go about it? --DavidRJD (talk) 02:47, 23 September 2024 (UTC)

No it isn't, because you haven't disclosed the nature of your COI (as per WP:DISCLOSE and WP:COIPAYDISCLOSE). User AllyD please see relevant discussion at the user's talkpage and at WP:COIN here [1]. Axad12 (talk) 02:53, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
Axad12, as to WP:COIPAYDISCLOSE, I am not paid by anyone for this. I'm not a paid editor. Unless you are open to hiring ;).
As to WP:COIN, I have disclosed that I am associated Nexperia.
DavidRJD (talk) 13:03, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
DavidRJD as with the other editors with whom you have been interacting , I agree that it is important to disclose any association which could give rise to any form of conflict of interest.
However, this can (a) discourage contribution from subject matter experts and (b) involve walking an uneasy path between clear disclosure and self-outing, which is not desirable. Balancing all these considerations is not easy.
Personally I avoid editing articles about firms with which I have been associated. While writing this reply I looked at some of these: they could be better; there are deficiencies where I know what impelled decisions, for example; but I accept that even at a distance of years the basic and even my subconscious trajectory for introducing that knowledge would need disclosure and the article is better left alone.
Where that is not the best course is a judgment call, though. I see no reason to preclude an SME contribution, but it is best started with a clear disclosure on the article Talk page and a draft wording there which can be shaped by consensus before being edited into the article. AllyD (talk) 09:24, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! Is the language above, "I am not paid, instructed, or told to make any edits to Wikipedia by any party. The opinions I post are based solely on my research and a good-faith effort. I have an association with an entity associated with Nexperia" sufficient to achieve the CoI notice goals? DavidRJD (talk) 13:04, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
That seems a reasonable statement of what I understand of your position, other than perhaps "The opinions I post" sounding more suitable to a forum than Wikipedia which aspires to WP:NPOV. Maybe better as something like "My edits and proposed edits" or just "My activity on Wikipedia"? And you would presumably adapt the wording if propising changes on the Talk page of the parent company or any other associated firms. AllyD (talk) 06:53, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
I will adopt and post this language before suggesting edits, and I will wait a week or so after making proposed changes to make edits to the primary articles. I appreciate your input, and thank you for taking the time to mentor me on the right way to go about edits. DavidRJD (talk) 22:40, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from Sunildhebe3114 (04:11, 28 September 2024)

I want to create my article? Where to create --Sunildhebe3114 (talk) 04:11, 28 September 2024 (UTC)

Sunildhebe3114, I am guessing that you are asking about how to place the Hatkar material currently placed on your user page into the main encyclopaedia? As a new editor, the path would be to create it as Draft:List of Hatkar clans then follow the review process. As it stands, a reviewer's concerns would be likely to concern the basis of the information and need for references. At the moment what you have there is completely unreferenced. Question from Sola The Moon (09:14, 4 October 2024)

Hello, my name is Damilare Atinsola, and I’m so honored to have someone with your kind of expertise as a mentor, thank you! I’m a writer and I’ve served an NGO for about half a decade in this capacity and beyond. I’d like to ask, does being an editor here allow me to publish new article and biographies?

Best regards. --Sola The Moon (talk) 09:14, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi Sola The Moon. Yes, being an editor allows one to create new articles on topics, including biographical articles. It is worth taking note of important policies such as WP:V, WP:COI, especially for biographies of living persons. Personally, I would advise starting by incrementally improving existing articles before creating new articles, to get the feel of the article structures, links, etc. However, a new editor's initial article creations go into Draft space and the Articles for creation process, which provides an experienced editor's eyes on the article before it goes into mainspace. AllyD (talk) 15:35, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much, AllyD!
I’ll go the links you’ve shared and try to get familiar with the process. 102.88.34.232 (talk) 03:38, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Gizzybizzy719 on The Republicans (France) (18:22, 22 October 2024)

Hello, I am seeking status updates including obligations, compliance and transparency reports. --Gizzybizzy719 (talk) 18:22, 22 October 2024 (UTC)

GizzyBizzy719, it sounds like you are seeking information which is not in the English Wikipedia article, nor in the equivalent French article. Are you seeking this in order to enhance the article, or for your own research purposes? I would say such reports are a technical level beyond what is appropriate to the article. Nor do I immediately see such reports linked from the party's own website. AllyD (talk) 19:45, 22 October 2024 (UTC)

CaseOhheartattack, I guess you mean the IP edit preceding the edit under your account name. I reverted it, as the sentence flow didn't really work with "a Royal rajput family of Namudag estate" before the place. (I would think "rajput" should also be capitalised?) I also feel that this family statement would need a reference, as any claim needs to be supported. But feel free to improve and re-add. AllyD (talk) 08:07, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
