Domaine Jessiaume is a family-founded wine estate located in Santenay, in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy, France. Established in the mid-19th century, the estate produces red and white wines from a number of Premier Cru and village-level appellations. Domaine Jessiaume is known for its parcel-focused viticulture, historic cellars, and regularly receives acclaim in international wine publications.
History
[edit]The estate was established by the Jessiaume family in the mid-19th century. It remained under family ownership for more than 150 years. In 2007, it was acquired by Scottish businessman Sir David Murray, who invested in the modernization of the winery while maintaining traditional practices.[1]
In 2020, the estate was purchased by Dr. Jean-François Le Bigot, a French scientist and wine enthusiast, bringing it back under French ownership.[2]
Vineyard and Terroir
[edit]Domaine Jessiaume cultivates more than 15 hectares of vineyards across multiple appellations, including:
- Santenay (Clos du Clos Genet, La Cassière)
- Santenay Premier Cru (Les Gravières, La Comme, Beauregard)
- Beaune Premier Cru (Les Cents Vignes)
- Pommard (La Combotte)
- Volnay and Volnay Premier Cru (Les Brouillards)
- Auxey-Duresses and Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru (Les Ecussaux)
- Regional appellations: Bourgogne Aligoté, Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Bourgogne Chardonnay
The estate practices high-density planting and the use of "échalas" single-stake training systems to enhance vine competition and terroir expression.[3]
Winemaking
[edit]Winemaking is carried out in historic cellars in Santenay, with a parcel-by-parcel approach. Gentle extraction methods and aging in French oak barrels are employed to preserve freshness and expressiveness. The estate focuses on producing wines with elegance, balance, and site-specific character.
Recognition
[edit]Domaine Jessiaume's wines are regularly reviewed by major international wine critics and publications, including:
- Decanter Magazine
- Vinous
- Wine Advocate (Robert Parker)
- Jasper Morris – Inside Burgundy
- La Revue du vin de France
- Guide Hachette des Vins
The estate has also received accolades at the Bourgogne Jeunes Talents awards.[4]
Wine tourism
[edit]Domaine Jessiaume welcomes visitors for guided tastings by appointment and regularly participates in local wine events, including the Saint-Vincent Tournante.[5]
