Stanislaw Jan Tajchman (May 7, 1931 – 2023) was a Polish meteorologist, geophysicist, and forest scientist. He was Professor Emeritus in the Division of Forestry at West Virginia University and served as the State Climatologist for West Virginia. His work spanned multiple countries and decades, focusing on forest meteorology, atmospheric boundary layer physics, energy and water balances in forests, and acid deposition.
Early Life and Education
Tajchman was born in 1931, in Wysoka, near Łańcut, Poland, the son of blacksmith Franciszek Tajchman and his wife Aniela. He attended the Henryk Sienkiewicz High School in Łańcut, graduating in 1950 from the mathematics and physics program, where he was recognized as an academic leader.
From 1950 to 1953, he studied physics at the University of Warsaw He completed his Master’s degree in Geophysics in 1958, while working at the aerological observatory in Legionowo. In September 1958, during a scientific delegation to East Germany, Tajchman crossed into West Berlin and sought political asylum.
He relocated to West Germany and, in 1960, began studies in meteorology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Supporting himself by translating Russian scientific literature into German, he earned a Meteorology Diploma in 1963 and a Doctor rerum naturalium (Dr. rer. nat.) in 1967. His doctoral work focused on energy and water balance in plant communities near Munich.
From 1968 to 1969, he was affiliated with the Department of Botany at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, applying his background in experimental physics and computer programming to forest ecology and tree physiology. He was fluent in several languages. 1968, he married Jadwiga Mrówka, a teacher, in Preston, England. They had one daughter.
Academic Career
In 1970–71, Tajchman worked at the Institute of Meteorology at the University of Freiburg, Germany, on mountain forest environments. From 1972 to 1977, he served as a lecturer in meteorology and biometeorology at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the New University of Ulster in Coleraine, Northern Ireland.
Tajchman emigrated to the United States in 1977 and joined the Division of Forestry at West Virginia University in Morgantown. He became a full professor and taught until his retirement in 1999, when he was named Professor Emeritus. His courses included meteorology, world climates, biometeorology, forest mensuration, and environmental influences in forestry. He conducted extensive research on forest microclimate, radiation balance, spatial variation in biomass, and the effects of acid deposition.
Tajchman also held visiting research positions at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the CSIRO Division of Forest Research in Australia, and the University of Melbourne.
Research Contributions
Tajchman's scientific contributions include studies on the energy and water balance of forest ecosystems, turbulent exchange above forest canopies, topographic influences on radiation and moisture, and spatial variation of acidic deposition. His work combined meteorology, geophysics, forestry, and ecology, and he was an early adopter of computing tools like Algol, Fortran, and SAS.
He published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and presented research at major international conferences, including IUFRO World Congress and AGU symposia.
