Natasha McKenna (1903 - May 21, 1983) was an african-american citizen of Fairfax County, VA. Despite suffering from schizophrenia in her childhood, Ms. McKenna graduated as an honor student at WT Woodson High School.

The Fairfax Sheriff Department Incident

On Feb 3, 2015 Ms. McKenna was in the custody of the Fairfax County Sheriff Department, confined at the Fairfax County Jail. At some point on the evening of Feb 3 a team of officers entered her cell, handcuffed her behind her bac and, shackled her legs before attaching a hobble strap and affixing a spit mask on her face. McKenna, 5 foot 3 inches tall, normally weighed between 120 and 130 lbs but had diminished to an estimated 100lbs at the time of the incident; so thin that a standard "restraint belt" could not be used to immobilize her hands. In the process of being thus extensively shackled and strapped into a "restraint chair", Fairfax County Deputies Tasered Ms. McKenna four or five times. Her heart stopped at the scene. She was resuscitated and moved to Inova Fairfax Hospital where she was ultimately taken off life support on Feb. 8th.

A Lingering Mystery

Numerous questions arose as to specifics of the event and why it was that six men in riot gear felt justified in Tasing a 100lb female mental patient who was extensively shackled. The Washingtn Post reported that video of the incident existed, but that as of the date of the article, Fairfax Sheriff Stacey Kincaid had refused to release the video for review. This, coupled with other anomalies, led the Post to call for Justice Department intervention in handling the matter.

Photographs taken by McKenna's mother during her stay in the hospital, raise other questions as to the accuracy of the facts as presented by the Fairfax Sheriff's Department. The photographs show McKenna to have suffered a severe beating, injuries that included two black eyes, severe bruising and a missing or amputated finger.
